On April 4, unions, people of faith, civil and human rights activists, students and other progressive allies will host a range of community and workplace-focused actions.

Join us in solidarity with working people in Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana and dozens of other states where well-funded, right-wing corporate politicians are trying to take away the rights Dr. King gave his life for. It’s a day to show movement. Teach-ins. Vigils. Faith events. A day to be creative, but clear: We are one.

In California find a solidarity rally near you

For other states click here to find a event in your area

Please show your solidarity by trying to make one of these events.

...and as good time was had by all...all several thousand of us...started at B of A (in front of "The Bankers' Heart" sculpture....moved along to Chase Manhattan, the Hyatt hotel, and ended at the Federal Reserve.

I admit to being proud to see the two (2) staff members from UFCW Local 648 who managed to make it and the six (6, or so) from UFCW Local 5. Was also very proud to see the several hundred members from UNITE HERE Local 2 who attended, among many, many, many other unions. Saw a bunch of old friends, as well.

FYI...I got lucky. Colon held up magnificently through the bus rides down and back and the walk through downtown. Wink

Any of you all have some fun. Question Question

Bill: San Francisco throws the best protests! Although several hundred union members and supporters showed up at the statehouse during the recent protest to the budget cuts in SC. Yes we in South Carolina must closely guard our position at the bottom less California or Wisconsin should get any ideas![img][/img]

On Monday April 4th Heather, myself and a family member who is a teacher and a member of CTA(Certified Teachers Association) stood with hundreds of other supporters of labor in Sacramento to rally our solidarity with the people of Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and any other states that the working class are under attack by the right wing robber barons.

The rally was to start at 5:00pm but we arrived about 45 minutes early. Many unions were in attendance, SEIU, AFSCME, UNITE HERE, Teamsters, CWA, ILWU, Iron Workers, Glazers Union, UAW, Religious groups, etc... The only union that I didn’t notice was the UFCW, that was until about the last 15 minutes of the rally which ended at 7:00pm, but I'll get back to that later.

I do have to compliment the organizers of the rally! The rally was kicked off at Cesar Chavez Park on the corner of 10th & Ist in Sacramento. The park is right across the street from Sacramento’s federal building, court house and Jail on I St. Also a main artery for a major freeway entrance. The organizers announced that all in attendance(1500 or so) would line both sides of the streets from 10th to the freeway entrance, about a 4 block distance. In a nut shell the rally cluster fucked the 5:00pm commuter traffic and couldn’t be missed! Only saw two main stream media news crews filming the event and to my knowledge the rally didn’t get much air time, not that I saw anyway and I viewed every local news station looking for it! Lot’s of horn honking and raised fist of support by passers by. A couple of middle fingers by annoyed commuters but we all know what side of the aisle they lean towards.

The entire rally I looked for some kind of representation from my union (UFCW Local 8 GS) but saw none! What a surprise! It wasn’t until the rally was winding up that we noticed “one” UFCW Local 8 sign being held by Adam Loveall. Adam was with one other UFCW 8 staffer, Joe Ciotti. I guess Joe didn’t get the memo that this wasn’t a formal event! Joe was sporting an expensive 2 piece pin striped suit and shinny black shoes(probably Gucci). Ciotti walked right up to me and looked me in the eye and then turned and walked away! Never said hello or acknowledged us just stared and walked away. I’m assuming this was Joe’s attempt at being intimidating? Rolling Eyes See me and Ciotti go way back! In fact in my less educated days I was a shop steward and Joe was my rep. I got a good chuckle at Joe’s tough guy attempt! In all honesty it was tough to tell Joe apart from a supposed supporter of “working America” and the right wing politicians trying to put working families back to the days of slavery. Just a suggestion Joe, next rally you may want to sport a pair of jeans and a T-shirt(like the hundreds of others at the rally) and try and blend in with real working people! What ashamed, 30,000 members in UFCW Local 8 and 2 staff with one sign show up to catch the last few minutes of the rally! With representation like that it’s a wonder why today’s working families are taking such a beating.

1500 plus at the rally was a decent showing but just imagine if big labor like the UFCW put in as much effort in mobilizing their members for events like this as they do in “selling” credit cards or insurance policies we would be a force to be reckoned with! Here’s to wishing.

The power of workers to bring production to a halt was on dramatic display April 4th, when longshore workers of ILWU Local 10 shut down the ports of Oakland and San Francisco for 24 hours, in solidarity with the heroic struggles in Wisconsin. The big container port of Oakland was deader than a doornail Monday at 6:00 a.m. I saw a long snake-line of trucks bearing shipping containers idled on the roadway. The shipping cranes were all “standing at attention” – i.e., not working any containers. The dock workers stayed away, and no cargo was worked on any shift Monday in Oakland or San Francisco.
“This was a voluntary rank and file action – an organized act of resistance,” said Clarence Thomas, Lo.10 exec board member.

Wave of Actions Proclaims ‘We Are One'

Quote:
Hundreds of ILWU members stayed off the job, leaving ships waiting in the San Francisco Bay. Some joined about 75 fellow union activists in attempting to stage a sit-in at the downtown Oakland Wells Fargo offices. They couldn’t get inside; the bank shut the branch down, as a sign on the door said, “due to protests today.”
