Straight down from corporate office :They are encouraging non spanish speaking employees to make a effort to be bilingual friendly as a courtesy to customers and fellow coworkers .The race card is being used alot by the majority of spanish speaking employees to intimidate fellow non spanish speaking ( African American - aisan - caucasian ) employees . Management plays it off because the frequency of the racecard being used and they dont want to deal with this because of the fear of damaging their careers . Safeway is going in the direction of getting rid of the union employees by flooding their stores with low paying workers who used to quit at their third month of employment because of the $800.00 union initiation fees . But now those $ 8.00 an hour workers stay because the union( has turned its back on the long time employees that voted them in ) makes it easy for the majority of the non english speaking to keep their jobs . The $ 8.00 an hour employee has seven years of 40 hour work weeks to make the union wages that the long term employees make now . Now days the 40 hour guaranteed work week employees are dwindling .For these $8.00 new hires the 40 work week is not guaranteed and if they stick it out it will be years before they can make the decent pay and the guaranteed 40 hour work week . By then the union pay will be slashed big time and the benifits will no longer be there and these $ 8.00 an hour employees will be making $ 10.00 a hour and everybody will be in the same boat at the county hospitals draining the state for medical assistance .The union is selling out the employees that voted them in years ago and the higher ups in the union are getting their money , they are not in it for the long haul , at the expence of the trusting old school workers they are filling their pockets while they can and walk away with Safeway getting what they want , obscene amount of profits , no union , no benefits and a abundance of $ 8.00 an hour employees . Customers will need to learn how to speak spanish just to shop for over priced food imported from china and mexico .... The old Mervyns store next to the Sun Valley Mall in Concord / Pleasant Hill is being renovated into a new upscale Safeway store and the word is that they are looking for non union contractors for the refit . Dont get me wrong , I am not a Safeway employee or a menber of a union , I know a few on both sides and I just wanted to bring this to the attention about the way greed and illegal uncontrolled mass immigration is turning our hard working middle class AMERICANS into slaves for the unappreciative scum.
Interesting if there is truth to this. Sounds possible to me. |

Hey, Grumpy...interesting post. I've been out of the loop for a few weeks and have not heard a word about this development out of corporate but I'll see what i can find out.
That said, what is amusing is Safeway's new program to engage with customers and "sell" a product(s). The fact is that most younger folks do not know much about food and cooking; further, the young members of the crew making, as you say, minimum wage (which in SF is $9.50 or $9.75) and who have only a long ugly road of part-time/laid-off/benefit-threatened future ahead of them, have little incentive to learn and perform that part of the part. "Can I grill romaine lettuce?" "What goes into making a vinagrette?" "What's the difference between French's mustard and the real Dijon mustard from France?" Someone like you or me with years in the food industry have a chance at answering such questions and getting a real answer for a customer. Not too many 20-year-olds could do so. or would want to, not for the wages and work conditions they are being given. Frankly, I do not blame them a bit. Most of them are smart, energetic and know when they are getting screwed. Unlike alot of us old-timers. |

BTW, I forgot to mention the NEWS FLASH.. SAFEWAY posted a $ 1.61 Billion Loss for the 4th Quarter of 2009. However, the "loss" was the result of a "one-time charge" involving the value of two acquisitions; without this SAFEWAY would have earned $209 Million in the 4th Quarter. Steve Burd, Safeway's CEO, also informed analysts that Safeway is competitive nationally in terms of its prices and has "gained an edge on key rivals" including Wal-Mart. Se habla dinero.. |
