UFCW Local 175 has been decertified at the Coca Cola plant in Hamilton Ontario. Workers at the plant formed a new union called the United Bottlers Workers Union last year as a result of growing concerns about the UFCW's CCWIPP pension plan and applied for certification when Local 175's contract entered its open period.
The UBWU was successful in a representation vote held in December 2006. The UFCW responded with a barrage of challenges, all of which were dismissed in a decision issued earlier this month by the Ontario Labour Relations Board. This is the first known decertification of a UFCW local as a direct result of concerns about the CCWIPP plan. Sources in the plant have told uncharted that in their last negotiations they were asked to take a wage freeze in exchange for increased employer contributions to CCWIPP. They agreed - on to learn in 2005 of the uses to which their money was being put. _________________ Time is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. "The Board declares that United Food & Commercial Workers International Union, Local 175 no longer represents the employees of Coca Cola Bottling Company Canada."
For the ufcw goof-ups, that has to be like finding the poop your dog left on the neighbors lawn, on your own doorstep. A whole years worth to boot. Can I say boot. It makes me wonder will you see similar things happening in Loveall's Local Ate in Sacramento? There has been many emails and much talk in the stores and the word of the day seems to be decertification. _________________ "When people refuse to obey, then democracy comes alive." Howard Zinn |

Funny you should say that LY. A senior member came in this a.m. and asked what I thought if we went to Safeway and cut a deal without our "leaders". Maybe people are paying attention and thinking a bit. |

Congrats to anyone who is successful in changing their Union or the leadership because the fight to do so can be vicious to say the least.

Hi Newfy and welcome to our world - What's your status right now? Are you still receiving WSIB or company sick benefits? Has the company ever written to you saying that your employment is terminated? It will be a little easier to try to answer your questions if we have more info about your situation.

Hello wm pasz, as to your questions no I am not collecting any benefits from WSIB as I am arguing
my case at Tribunal when ever that happens I am collecting CPP disability. The employer no I have not received a letter of termination and I am using their drug plan. I am concerned so today I approached my local and argued the status of my membership and reminded them I had not quit my place of employment as 175 had reported in a letter to the CCwipp Pension Trustees which blew up in their faces. I did however request my membership be placed on their disability file or I would be seeking legal advice and go from there. I won that one. Why is it you you have to fight your own membership to keep your own ass out of the frying pan when you end up in the situations revolving around injuries in the work place? Do they not understand that if they protected their members in the work place to a degree work injuries may not be so high? I strongly feel that what the workers did at Coca Cola here in Hamilton may be a turning point here in Southern On Lets hope so. |
