Quote: YOU PROBABLY think you're a really lovely person. And, for all I know, you are. But your brain isn't so pretty. It is a lumpen mass prone to making quickfire judgments based on prejudices you didn't even know you possessed.
The researchers were particularly interested in whether a part of the brain called the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) whirred into action. The MPFC is activated when we think about ourselves or other people. It turns out that photographs of people that elicited disgust triggered little MPFC activity. The researchers claim in Psychological Science that this is proof that "members of some social groups seem to be dehumanised". These outgroups are perceived as having alien moral values, social norms and beliefs; so alien, the observers' brains appear to conclude, that they are not even members of the same species. Quote: “Many of the groups who have been subject to mass killings . . . were once seen as entrepreneurs but perceived as outsiders,” she explained. Such killings are sometimes termed “ethnic cleansing”, which illustrates, if only lexically, that we intuitively grasp the disturbing relationship between bigotry and disgust. What’s the suggestion in this article? Is it that we intuitively distrust members of other races, creeds, or ethnic groups for fear that those groups will in some way compromise our own group? Quote: The pictures were chosen to elicit emotions suspected by psychologists to be associated with prejudice: pride, envy, pity and disgust. That’s interesting in view of some of the work done by ‘social scientists’ of 50/60 years ago who tried to locate and correct the very source of human prejudice –rendering, as a panacea, our current notion of ‘social diversity.’ What would happen if it was discovered that social prejudice was indeed ‘intuitive,’ or more likely termed, a group ‘defense mechanism.’ In any case the article buttresses my contention that all individual humans have the capacity for maleficent behavior to some degree. |

We're all capable of evil - who knew! That and extremely limited controlled information could lead one to believe the article has a message, no? I wonder what it is. Quote: In any case the article buttresses my contention that all individual humans have the capacity for maleficent behavior to some degree The scientists didn't factor in the part about not everyone acts upon maleficent behavioral tendancies, in fact the majority don't. And there's a huge difference between thinking it and acting it out. Quote: The pictures were chosen to elicit emotions suspected by psychologists to be associated with prejudice: pride, envy, pity and disgust. If we are what we eat, then why would we think it's any different for the brain/mind - we are what we take in - body, soul and mind. We do only what we know, no more no less. If the negative evil is possible then so too is the positive - both ends of the spectrum. It could be as simple as we've spent the better part of absolute eons, perhaps our entire existance provoking, propelling, perpetuating, and sadly enough, honing 'evil'. It's common knowledge that to be better at something you must practice practice practice. What are we practicing? Why are we in perpetual defense mode? It's about bloody time we took a look back to see who we're emulating and how we fashion the human psyche and of course, the big why - how did that happen? _________________ Free speech is the whole thing, the whole ball game.
