About 20 percent think that the sun rotates around the Earth, a possibility Copernicus and Galileo supposedly buried centuries ago.

And less than a fourth of Americans can describe any of the reasons for the thinning of the ozone layer.

The latest study verifies earlier ones showing that only about 40 percent of Americans believe that humans descend from apelike ancestors. In nearly all other industrial nations, about 80 percent accept evolution as fact.

Both interesting and sad. A recent report also indicated that only 1 in 4 high school seniors in the US could readily point to the state of California on a US map.

Folks are much easier to control when you keep 'em dumb.

It’s interesting that this topic should come up here. The resistance to the ‘dumbing down’ of public education was the province of one Phillis Schlafly in the 70s and 80s. She wrote about it extensively and founded “The Eagle Forum” [Eagle Forum.org] which was, in part, a watchdog group dedicated to countering Liberal tampering in American culture and society.

You might say that she won many battles against the Libs in the thirty + years of her struggles with them, but from the looks of today’s cultural landscape; she [we] lost the war –especially in the area of public education.

Schlafly’s natural heir is now none other than the razor tongued, arch conservative columnist –Ann Coulter who often shows up on O’Reilly’s “No Spin Zone,” and on “Hannity and Combs.”

For a sample of Schlafly’s comments see: http://www.eagleforum.org/column/2006/may06/06-05-24.html

It should warm some hearts in this part of cyberspace. Then again it may produce mixed results.

I had forgotten about Phillis Schlafly. I haven't even heard the name in years. That Eagle Forum stuff always seemed a little ominous to me....still does!

But it is a good point about the "dumbing down" of America. Education is one area where I do think the political left has dropped the ball. Wherever one plots-out on the political spectrum, education is the key to being an engaged citizen. In Calgary AB, Canada - for those who know where Canada is - make that 3R's and an E for entrepreneur. A middle school(s) in Calgary is actually growing a bunch of little entrepreneurs as part of regular curriculum.

A mindless teacher introduced the kids to making money and helped them set up a full fledged store front where they learn how to profit off their school mates and it's blossomed into a full fledged program. And the mindless teacher did it all on the public buck.

Hey kids, do you know where your parents are?
