DOL Hilda Solis's Department Accused Of Covering-Up Terrorism Against Workers
Quote: Labor supported Hilda Solis who is the secretary of the US Labor Department is accused by building trades workers with covering up corruption and terrorism against dissident union members at LIUNA Local 166 and at Bricklayers Local 3
Rank and file members of bay area locals LIUNA Local 166 of the Hodcarriers and Bricklayers Local 3 leafletted and protested in front of the US Department of Labor In San Francisco on March 1, 2010. They charged that the department has failed to act over illegal retaliation for union activity and also malfeasance and theft of union resources. Read More Also view video Great idea! Protesting and leafleting the DOL office! We'll have to make note of that for future UFCW protest. _________________ "When people refuse to obey, then democracy comes alive." Howard Zinn |

Kudos to the protest and, friend or foe, kudos to blip TV for air time. Sounds like LIUNA members have the same concerns about their organization as do UFCW members, Golden Eight members to name a few. The problems LIUNA members are facing ring all too familiar no? While malfeasance and corruption may be a union specific problem, the oversight belongs to the DOL.
For corruption and malfeasance to fester within labour organizations, such as it has, it's logical to conclude that the DOL is either complicit in the corruption, or by and large, run by highly incompetent people. Someone is not doing their job! I'm sure these Liuna people would welcome support from members from other organizations who have the same concerns about their union and about the DOL's lack of oversight. I would think a nice cross section of union members with the same complaints couldn't be so easily ignored. Why wait Ly? _________________ Free speech is the whole thing, the whole ball game. Great and timely thread Laboryes....... Having experienced first hand the incompetence of the DOL over these past 2 years, it is truly pathetic how they basically do not give a shit about enforcing Plan Participants / Union / Employees Rights. The two (2) DOL agents that I was involved with in my quest / struggle to obtain current and updated Summary Plan Descriptions (SPD's) didn't provide me with any sense that they were interested and or cared about if and when justice would be served anytime soon. In fact, the DOL agent I was assigned to out of the San Francisco office, was more concerned / agitated that I had her E-Mail addresss and that I was sending her E-Mails providing her information and inquiring about my case . Go figure? Additionally, my most recent telephone conversation to the DOL agent when asked as to the status of the two (2) remaining SPD's for Retirees and the Pension Plan, her response was she didn't know that she had aleady closed the file. I would also like to make a suggestion for a little action @ our Trust Fund Offices in Walnut Creek. That group... i.e., Mr. Osterweil et.al., really needs a "spanking" ASAP! |

Hey LY...... here is something that might be helpful. This is the DOL organizational chart off the internet.
http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/aboutebsa/org_chart.html Scroll down until you reach the DOL Regional Office Director in San Francisco. Billy Beaver is the DOL Regional Office Director in San Francisco. His contact information is available. BTW...... here is another link in the event that anyone needs to file a complaint with the DOL via the internet. http://askebsa.dol.gov/SecInit/ Keep in mind, that the "more shit we throw against the wall, something is bound to stick sometime!!" |

Easy for me to say - why wait? Find a day, gather up your California sharpies and cardboards and get your asses down to the DOL offices - eh. You know Sharyn I think you have a real valid point! I think we need to put some serious discussion into this idea. It would be good if we could find a way to contact our brothers from LIUNA too. Have any vaction days left Sharyn? Would be cool to have a Canadian voice in the dissent crowd as well! I know that the DOL follows uncharted regularly so here's a little friendly wave letting you know we may be seeing you soon

I threw out an invite to the members from LIUNA Local 166 to see if they were interested in coming here to uncharted to discuss combining issues and organizing another protest at the DOL office in SF.
Quote: Hello Brothers from LIUNA Local 166.
Caught your post here at indybay and thought you’d like an invite over to http://www.uncharted.ca I posted your piece at uncharted, you can find it here http://forums.uncharted.ca/about1604.html A lot of us at uncharted are members from the UFCW and have been dealing with the same problems with our union leaders as you documented on your piece here at indybay. Many of us on uncharted are members of UFCW Locals in Northern California. We really liked your protest at the DOL office in SF! Many of us at uncharted have had our own dealings with the DOL regarding corruption & nepotism within our locals, UFCW Local 8 Golden State being the worst offender! We would love to see you login at uncharted and discuss maybe another protest on the DOL office combining our union's issues into one big protest! If this is something your interested in please find your way over to the discussion and let us know what you think. In Solidarity Laboryes The bigger the voice...the bigger the protest! You can follow the indybay discussion here: http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2010/03/03/18639438.php Thoughts? _________________ "When people refuse to obey, then democracy comes alive."
