Future pension accruals will be cut by up to 60 percent. Members now face another five years of a two-tier contract that has turned more than half the membership into a second class of workers. All new hires will enjoy less vacation time, start at minimum wage, and endure a longer wage progression. Some will wait longer for health insurance; some will wait less. A third tier for baggers was created; they won’t get health insurance for three years and will remain at minimum wage forever.

That seems like a formula for labour union suicide.

Welcome to the UFCW CUPE! Land of concessionary bargaining!!! Give away the farm before you even try putting up a fight.

Joe Hansen and the boys in DC have finally done it with this one.....

Workers are now better off working at a Wal-Mart than they are in a store represented by the UFCW! Way to go Joe! Important thing is Hansen and the rest of the pigs feeding at the trough will continue to get “theirs” while the new third tier workers will front the bill while making less than minimum wage after their union dues and initiation fees are reaped from their pay checks. UFCW 1518: The tear years

Picture it, BC, 1996, a little twist on the Denver split vote trick but the same divide and conquer multi-tiered outcome. Because Safeway's contract expired before the Overwaitea (Save-On-Foods) it was common practice that whatever Safeway members ratified, Overwaitea members were stuck with the me too deal. That changed in '96.

Overwaitea members, whose contract didn't expire until April of '97 found themselves at the bargaining table - and walking the token make_them_eat_shit 6 week lock-out/strike line - in the summer of '96. Then, under employer threats of store closures - delivered by 1518 no less - they soon found themselves in a cramped hot motel room in August of '96 ( a full 9 months before their contract expired) voting on "the deal".

The machineheads (brooke sundin et al) and the employer partners knew the deal would never have made it past the much more seasoned safeway members. So they devised a nifty trick. Feed it to Overwaitea members first and thusly it could be shoved up Safeway members' asses later by forcing them into the me-too position. It worked!

Overwaitea members were sufficiently threatened that they ratified with nary a whimper. Safeway members - pissed though they were at the rest of us - swallowed it too.

That was the formal introduction into ufcw members multi-tiered world. More cement was poured in 2003 and again in 2008. Between the blending of classifications, the abundance of side agreements, secreted arbitration decisions, an elusive interpretation guide (that's a story onto itself), an undecipherable wage scale, I'll wager that no trougher could identify how many tiers there are in a ufcw retail agreement. Fucktards!

What is known though, is that the ufcw defense fund sits relatively idle. ufcw dues are skyrocketing. ufcw members' living standard is now below non-union standards and Wal-mart is looking like not a bad place to make a much needed second income for a majority of ufcw members.
