http://www.walmartworkersofcanada.ca does not go any where. Are we sure that was ever the site name??? If yes... something interesting has gone down... Added a few minutes later... it is www.walmartworkerscanada.ca and it works just fine _________________ No Beast so fierce knows but some small amount of pity, but I know none and so I am no beast. ~ Richard III |

To Pasz,
RE: UFCW no angel on issue of free speech - That was an excellent article you wrote, which you helpfully provided a link to, highlighting the hypocrisy of the UFCW 'leadership' when it comes to free speech. My favourite was this bit - Quote: The Members for Democracy have not been the only target of the UFCW's attacks on Internet free speech. Over the past few years, other targets of UFCW lawsuits have included:
............... * A former employee who wrote a number of online articles about the union's allegedly corrupt internal practices. The UFCW asked for an injunction forbidding him from ever talking about the union again -- in any context, bad or good. The lawsuit was dismissed. ................ The union actually asked for an injunction forbidding the guy from ever talking about the union again -- in any context, bad or good? What cheek. |

Oh you'll laugh til you puke when you hear the back story to some of these cases. The UFCW's MO in a lot of these lawsuits goes sort of like this:
Threaten to sue. If that doesn't work, file a statement of claim. Ask for a ridiculous remedy - like "silence forever, no talking about us ever again, without our permission" - drag the poor unrepresented defendant into court and then, when he, she or they are facing your team of $400 an hour guys (whose tab is being paid by the members) and they're good and frightened, offer to make a deal. The deal involves withdrawal of the lawsuit, sometimes some money and your silence forever. The judgment in the case of the employee who the UFCW didn't want talking about them ever again - even to say nice things - is at this link http://canlii.org/en/bc/bcsc/doc/2005/2005bcsc1454/2005bcsc1454.pdf I attended this hearing and let me tell you it was a hoot. Mikey Fraser the UFCW Canadian Director (who wasn't present of course) came off looking like a complete idiot. Much of the oppressive lawsuit-filing happened on Mikey's watch. It was pretty clear towards the end that they wanted to play let's make a deal, but the defendant wasn't going to have any of it. _________________ Time is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. Ah yes... this was about where I came into the story.
I saw much of that case, as well as some photocopied cheques and several permutations of the term: Eduction, Training and Safety Heady days... _________________ No Beast so fierce knows but some small amount of pity, but I know none and so I am no beast. ~ Richard III |
