As global corporatism gags on its own breath, now is the time to explore alternative ways of living and working. This insightful article by Marcin Gerwin discusses how democracy can serve as the cornerstone of a new economic and social order. (Originally posted by the Permaculture Institute).

While this particular idea seems to be centered on rural agricultural areas, I think it can also serve as a template for change in urbanized regions. I visit Detroit a couple of times a year, and I’ve accumulated a lot of friends from the city. Every time I visit, I’m amazed at the city’s decline…but also at its promise. Detroit was “built” to accommodate a population of two million people. Its current population is a bit over 800,000. This has left the city with huge swaths of unoccupied land which has the potential to be used for sustainable urban agriculture. In addition, there are literally hundreds of abandoned factories and warehouses throughout Detroit. With minor rehabilitation, these spaces could give rise to an endless array of small-scale worker collectives which could produce for local needs.

Land in Detroit can be found at incredibly cheap rates…the current median home price within the city limits is $6,800 (that’s right, only two zeroes). I’ve even discussed with friends the idea of getting together and trying some type of urban sustainability experiment in Detroit. I really think the city has the potential to regain its greatness by being an urban incubator for new ideas.

Have no fear, J.J., that's exactly what I mean...and in the most respectful of ways. I like the city more and more every time I visit. Detroit has a wonderful labor/working class history, and it's heartbreaking to see what's going on there now. But the economic and land use realities of modern Detroit make the city unique in its potential to provide for a NEW WAY of living.

An article about urban gardening and some interesting possibilities to be showcased at an upcoming Toronto conference, Carrot City. I'm going to check it out.

Aside from the obvious benefits, growing your own food and having a garden space is empowering in the most basic sense of the word. Anyone ever wonder why the experts don't recommend putting food seeds in survival kits?
