Money is choking our democracy to death. Our elections are bought out from under us and our public officials are doing the bidding of mercenaries. So powerful is the hold of wealth on politics that we cannot say America is working for all Americans. The majority may support such broad social goals as affordable medical coverage for all, decent wages for working people, safe working conditions, a secure retirement, and clean air and water, but there is no government "of, by, and for the people" to deliver on those aspirations. read more...

The whole clean money campaign is a growing initiative and might just help bring about some needed changes in the "buying of democracy" issues which are rampant in the U.S. And sites such as follow the money are making it easier for the average citizen to place their local and state politicians under the monetary microscope!

And although 85% of the population agrees on the necessity of clean air and water, there is little done to remedy the dire situation of our enviroment. In the gold vs. green piece, it is shown that the leading contributors of pollution have given political contributions around $180 million since 1989, while enviromental groups have given probably less than $10 million. As long as "big money" is allowed in our political machine, there will be no justice or equality.

Interesting to say the least. We stood by while they ravaged the rest of the earth's resources, will we stand up and say no, now that they're here for the rights to the last of earth's usable water sources? Is water life or death enough to fight for? Stay tuned.

Congress continues to be bought and paid for and compromise on issues, as in the immigration bill, is practically non-existant due to the election promises made to the congressmen's supporters from the special interest groups. This buying of congress is very much bipartisn and the pot and the kettle are just as smudged with this accepted tripe! Our congressional legislators average somewhere around 300+- actual days in legislative session for every two year term. This leaves them somewhere around 430+- days to take their breaks and vacations from Washington. It has to be a very stressful job!

This practice of buying congress is a travesty to the very idea of democracy and it destroys any hope of fair and equal hearings on matters that affect the citizens. As in the Abramoff Case:

Quote:
The list of lawmakers who received money from Abramoff and his clients comprises nearly 60% of the 109th Congress. After Senate Majority Leader Frist declared on “Meet the Press” that he would return all his “Abramoff-tainted money,” host Tim Russert asked whether every member of Congress should do the same. Frist, whose office did not respond to CRP’s requests for additional comment, told Russert, “I'll leave that to the members.” So far, holding on to millions of dollars from Abramoff’s clients, both he and other politicians appear to be following a different course.

It's no different in this free country of Canada - you can buy 'most anything with the right amount of money. In fact it's rumour'd that canads's political finest are selling our stuff to america's political finest, faster than.

It all begs the question - what are people going to do about it?
