If you ever happened to end up in a vastly outnumbered minority group, and the majority voted that you must give up something as necessary to your life as water and air, would you comply? When it comes down to it, does anyone really believe in recognizing the authority of a group simply because they outnumber everyone else? We accept majority rule because we do not believe it will threaten us, and those it does threaten are already silenced before we can hear their misgivings.

The first precious grains of this new world can be found in your friendships and love affairs, when they are free from power relations and cooperation occurs naturally. Take this model, and expand it to the whole of society— that is the world "beyond democracy" for which the heart cries out today.

As I read this, I couldn't help but think of all of you in 588 and the injustice of which you've just been subjected. The day will come when the battles won't be fought on their ground, but on our own terms, time, and place of choosing. Thanks guys for helping us all evolve into something much better than what the power mongers currently offer! The votes may not show it, but it was a victory for all working people!

I'm not so sure it's as cut and dry as all that. I can live under majority rule as long as it's pure. Not only do I think it doesn't threaten us but as a whole I assume others to have much the same life requirements, give or take a degree or two. So it should work.

Unfortunately, when it comes to show and tell, I don't think as democratic nations that majority rule is allow'd to flourish. It's in name only. I don't for one minute believe that we live under or have lived under any kind of majority rule system. It's quite simply, dysfunctional, name and process, under the corporatist agenda. Shake that and it may have a chance - I know people could work it out.

I guess it's obvious that I believe in participatory democracy through consensus huh? Smile

I agree completely! But I also don't think there is any way to correct this. The majority rule was a good idea at the time, but due to the vertical structures, it has evolved into a tool of the few. New structures require new rules in my opinion, and democracy through consensus makes much more sense to moi!

A democracy where (all) share in the final decision making. A democracy where there is no minority and no losers. If there is no minority, then there can be no exploitation IMHO.

You're absolutely right. I don't believe in majority rule as it's been established. I think people on the whole have the same basic requirements I think I could live with it and that it would be part and parcel of natural community. I wouldn't atr all feel threaten'd by it.

In reality and to date, there is no such animal in existence - never has been. Majority rule in essence and IMO is, or should be, simply outcomes of human co-existence. If left to it's natural state, majority rule(s) would be ever-changing, ever-rotating in response to.

When rules are hard and fast, there can be no rotation or change.

Frightfully true inside unions.

A lot more needs to be done to publicize dissenting opinions and to protect dissidents from discrimination.
