The impending closure of Loblaw's Erin Mills distribution center and the loss of 850 jobs there is another stinking chapter in the United Food and Commercial Workers Union's legacy of corporate cheerleading.

It's been a very complex and mind numbing series of events over the last 6 years, but you nailed it down pretty good wm.
I wish I could say that we have hit the end of this long a painful road and that we can start to put it behind us and move on, but my gut tells me that we are not done yet. Once again (given the current situation with the UFCW at Erin Mills), we at the Maplegrove warehouse are going to have to explore our options for decertification or displacement once we hit our open period in about 2 years. Of course this will open old wounds and re-kindle some hatred and resentment amongst workers, but what is the alternative? In the past the UFCW was able to defect our attacks with fear, propaganda, and outright lies, but this debacle is a little harder to sweep under the carpet because now they have alienated the very workers that were so quick to come to their defence. After we had our last decertification attempt at Maplegrove I had conceded defeat, I realized that it was a futile effort and that the workers just didn't want it bad enough to finaly pull the trigger and put this so called "union" out of it's misery, I see now that I may have waived the white flag a tad too soon! |

Quote: SCIENTISTS from the US Agricultural Research Service (ARS) have developed a system that, it claims, calms cattle herds, in turn, lessening the risk of workers being injured.
Calves are rated 1-5 for calmness or aggression prior to handling. Unstable cattle are removed from the herd and painful tools, such as prods, are avoided, calming livestock going through chutes. ARS added that calmer livestock also gain more weight than those subject to stress. This technique has been used very successfully by some unions: SCIENTISTS from the Union Research Service (URS) have developed a system that, it claims, calms bargaining units, in turn, lessening the risk of machineheads losing their jobs. Bargaining Unit Members are rated 1-5 for complacent gullibility or highly-aware activism prior to the screwing process. The aware, activism-prone members are neutralized within the group by ad-hominem attacks. Tools, such as truth and transparency, are avoided, thereby calming gullible members going through the screwing chutes. URS added that gullible members also complain less about being screwed by their union than those subject to truth. The new union motto: Our members spoke and WE HERD THEM |

I no longer live in Ont. you may just check on legislation for decertifying,if your contract is more than 2 years, there are (were)options for that bargining unit to decertify.Check with a Lawyer, I wish I could give a Name but the ones I knew left Ont many years ago.Request a choice ballot and try to find a union that is acceptable and is willing to go onto the ballot to decertify, if you can do this it is almost certain to succeed, Coke in Hamilton have just voted to decertified. Call them////

Thanks for the advice taffy but we have gone through the decert/displace crap like 4 times already, we know what the rules are and all the obstacles in our way.
We would likely not go the decert route again because it is a lot harder to pull off, but getting another union to take up the cause brings it's own set of problems, FUCKING CLC! Just for clarification, there is an open period every year after the third year of a multi year contract, it lasts for a period of 3 months, we signed a 4 year deal and are around a year into it. |

To All the Erinmills Loblaws Warehouse Members
I want to say that because of the UFCW's lack of action your jobs are being outsourced to a low wage third party. As a UFCW member myself I believe this union needst to be reformed or kicked out and all the workers that are losing their jobs at erinmills that you guys put up a good fight against this corrupt union fought to the end for your jobs and I hope all the best in the future.
