Over seventy groups have signed up to testify before federal regulators deciding, of all things, whether Wal-Mart can open a bank. Both sides are marshaling their forces for the fight. The Salvation Army and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, each recipients of Wal-Mart funds, signed up to testify after they were contacted by Wal-Mart officials. Jobs for Justice and Americans for Democratic Action are working with Wakeupwalmart.com, a union-backed group also scheduled to testify.

I'm beginning to have a change of heart towards wal-mart! Hell, I think we should eliminate our local and federal governments and transform society into a Wal-State! Just imagine.....All our social programs could be funded by tax revenue generated by the Wal-Consumerists. And who knows, we could progress into a system similar to the coal mine community's company stores or what has been called, a truck system.

We could even have a Wal-Army to protect us not only from terrorism but from ourselves! Who knows, we could one day see a Wal-World or maybe even a Waliverse! Razz

I wonder how much of this has to do with the possibility of wal mart encroaching on the money market (heart of america). There's nothing like a little competition to bring out defenders. wal mart wiped out retail competition, now the wal mart bulldozer is aiming at something near and dear to their hearts - monetary control. That has to be frightening.

I know others will disagree, but quite frankly, I think for people already under the economic gun, being owned by walmart or big banks makes little difference. I don't believe for even one nano-second that this action against walmart was spurred by any real concern for the welfare of the citizens. nuh unh.

Yeah, it's more about business interests and the capitalistic ideals. The fact that wal-mart's proposed bank in Utah is the industrial loan company variety, is what concerns the majority of opponents to the wal-bank. The red flag for most of these opponents is this type of financial institution is entirely unregulated by any government federal reserve agencies!

The biz world goes so easily and willing into corporate prostitution. It won't be long before this corporation owns their own fishing fleets and produce farms. They already have almost all the brand-name manufacturers on their knees fighting to see who can give em' the best head in town! The whole damn country has turned into a bunch of corporate whores with absolutely no gag reflexes and the next corporn star will likely be insured by the FDIC!

The FDIC currently guarantees checking and savings deposits in member banks up to $100,000 per depositor.
I'm not sure what it's called in Canada, and I believe the guarantee is only 60 grand, but I've always been kind of amazed there was one. I suppose there has to be some incentive for people to keep their money in an institution instead of the mattress. Given today's volitility, we'll may want to rethink the mattress option. It's kind of what some larger corps are doing - why pay another instutution to store the profit.

It's kind of sadly hilarious to see this - taking on walmart at the money level. First we walk and then we run.

I prefer the ol' buried tin can method myself! Mr. Green

It's really all about pickles.

There is no question that Wal-Mart's relentless drive to squeeze out costs has benefited consumers. The giant retailer is at least partly responsible for the low rate of U.S. inflation, and a McKinsey & Co. study concluded that about 12% of the economy's productivity gains in the second half of the 1990s could be traced to Wal-Mart alone.
