Want to subscribe to an uncharted rss/atom feed, but can't find it.

If it it not part of the CMS, you can use ListGarden to add one.

Good point Matt. I think it's important to point out that we're in transition. sleK is/was working under some deadly deadlines. Priority is to preserve MfD's treasures and at the same time keep a roof over our heads. Or he may have just forgotten.

Either way, please bear with us. sleK!!!!!!!! Laughing

It's coming, maybe in March or April. Our CMS's default implementation is pretty weak.

Pending set up of RSS, you can use Listgarden http://softwaregarden.com/products/listgarden/ to create an easily updated rss feed for the site. It's free, open source and works great.

Good timing. It was my plan to work on the RSS today. Big job, we're going to have 7, maybe 8, feeds. One for the news and articles, one for each journal (4 to start), one that encompasses all of the journals, one for the forums, and perhaps one that encompasses everything. Shocked

I'd like to make it user configuable too. So if you wanted only the news and topics and you wanted them in one feed, you could edit the query string manually.

I'll post my progress here.

Interested to see how it works.

Well, "7 or 8" turned into "virtually unlimited".

It looks as though users will be able to choose whatever categories from whatever sections in any combination simply by manipulating the query string.

A couple of examples (subject to change):

Code:

// assuming the script is called script.php

// defaults to 10 items in RSS2.0

// returns 10 items from the news, articles,
// and a fictional journal named "foo"
// in RSS2.0
script.php?source=news+articles+journals:foo

// returns 20 items from three journals
// "foo", "bar", and "baz" in ATOM format
script.php?source=journals:foo,bar,baz&limit=20&version=ATOM

// returns 20 items from one journal,
// the "labour" news category, and the
// "Your Union" forum in OPML
script.php?source=journals:foo+news:labour+forums:union&limit=20&version=OPML

// calling script.php without any parameters
// will be equivalent to this:
script.php?source=news+articles+journals+forums&limit=10&version=RSS2.0

Pending any serious flaws in my logic, it should be finished in a few days. I'd like to document it before running with it though so it may take till sometime next week.

I'm using this feedcreator class to spit them out.

Just an update for anyone interested.

The syndication is almost complete and it works exactly like my previous post. We'll be offering rss 2.0, 0.91, 1.0, atom 0.3, opml, html, and a javascript feed.

All that's left to do is develop some sort of semi-intelligent caching system to reduce the load on the db server, test it thoroughly, then document it. It could probably use some better error handling to.

sorry to hear you lost the .net addy. I thought they would have given up years ago. I wonder what they could achieve if they put that much effort into negotiating better contracts. Rolling Eyes

I'm currious though, why did you drop the MFD part from the domain? I get the "uncharted" part but branding is pretty darn important to any group business or otherwise. Your starting all over again are you not?

I understand 1518 was in the OFG stores on the verg of turing into price marts (hey Brooke I thought all the deals you've given were supposed to guarantee job security?) claiming responcibility for the Maple Ridge Safeway employees victory in arbitration a few years back. Starting over...wouldn't that provide 1518 in particular with the chance to re-write recent history? The meat behind the plan to take that web site away in the first place? Question

It's not exactly lost - the judgement was that MfD couldn't use it. A little parsely and ufcw.net is still good to go.

As for the 1518 crap, not to take anything more away from the syndication thread, it's all in grievance. Waiting I'm told for ofg to name a date or an arb. ofg on the other hand says it did and it's 1518 which is dragging it's feet. Conclusion - both parties benefit from the lengthy delay between imaginary processes.

You'll be interested to know bw2, that ufcw 1518 is taking full credit for the Maple Ridge deal - the real supergroup is never mentioned in 1518's quest for some kind of honest to goodness real union recognition.
