Part 05: Bad Boys
To fully appreciate the daring move the Canadian UFCW made when it decided, in the early 1990's, to quietly invade the Hotel Employees Restaurant Employees Union's turf, it helps to understand who was actually running HERE. The whole thing. _________________ Time is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. Truth is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. Quote: All that was needed were strong leaders, unlikely to ever be deposed by members, who would be counted on to take care of business. Once in, they were difficult to dislodge. Quote: It was this mob-dominated casino-hungry union's turf that Cliff Evans and the Canadian UFCW decided to invade, quietly but with great determination, in 1992. _________________ Free speech is the whole thing, the whole ball game. What's really intriguing (and frightening) is the role that our governments (Canada and US) played in enabling the infiltration of unions by the mob. The idea of the strong leader who would brook no opposition was pivotal to the success of the labour relations system (which was established to keep workers disempowered while giving them the illusion of representation).
In the US, there at least seems to have been some desire to crack down on organized criminals who use unions as just another illicit income stream. In Canada, law enforcement agencies and governments have completely looked the other way. It's like there was quiet "fourth partner" in the bargain that was struck between business, government and organized labour in the mid 20th century: The underworld. In a sense that seems almost fitting - the organized labour paradigm that was instituted to control and disempower working people was a lot like the padrone system. Quote: The Padrone system mentioned is the governing of labor bosses who would greet Italian immigrants upon their arrival to the United States. These individuals would help in the search for employment, collected their wages and acted as a higher authority during disputes, often in a corrupt system. _________________ Time is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. Part 06: Silent Partners
Before we get into the details of the UFCW's innovative hospitality industry penetration plan, it's important to take stock of the context in which it unfolded and get acquainted with some of the other biz union players who helped make the UFCW's dream come true. The rest. _________________ Time is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. Truth is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor.
