In a valiant effort to cross all the "-i's" - and dot all the "-t's-", let us take collective note of the following:
The Instituto Laboral de la Raza held its annual fundraiser dinner on Friday, 12 February 2010. Billed as the "Summit of Solidarity", the dinner was held at the Irish Cultural Center (a grand, lovely place immediately adjacent to - and at least partially downwind from - the San Francisco Zoological Gardens) rather than at the usual downtown Hilton Hotel out of respect for UNITE HERE lOCAL 2 BOYCOTT of that and other SF hotels. ***(UFCW officers may wish to look up that word, "boycott", since it does not seem to be in the active lexicon of that organization.) Apparently, the Instituto has run out of UFCW officers to honor (or perhaps adjectives to describe said honor in an appropriate fashion). We quite understand. So, the Guest of Honor and "Labor Leader of the Year" was none other than Richard Trumka, the newly elevated president of the AFL-CIO. All was not lost, however. The "Jim Rush Community Service Award" was given to Ms. Esther Lopez, the Civil Rights and Community Action Director of the UFCW International Union. (The absolute dedication of the UFCW International and Locals to civil rights, especially the rights of its members, and to community action - see above ** boycott** - including action undertaken by the community of UFCW members have been the subject of occasional commentary on this site and require nothing further be said. Further, the La Raza Corporate Leadership Award was given to none other than Ron Burkle, the owner/CEO/big kahuna of the Yucaipa Companies which, coincidentally, owns the non-union and somehow-not-yet-organized-by-the-UFCW grocery chain "Trader Joe's". It is also worth noting that Mr. Burkle, owner of the non-union and somehow-not-quite-organized-by-the-UFCW, Trader Joe's, is also a major contributor to the Democratic Party, nationally and in California. (Besides, who really needs to organize Trader Joe's when you can spend your time and your members' dues organizing Whole Foods, Walgreens, Smart and Final, or even the non-union, double-breasted operators like Raleys.) Another year, another heartfelt "BRAVO!!!!! |

Thank you, Brother JB.
And let us not forget the immortal notion that "Constipation is a form of Solidarity". So a "summit" of such "solidarity" sounds, well, uncomfortable, maybe more than uncomfortable. Let us hope that the wallets of donors to the Instituto were not puckered nearly to that degree of "summit-tude". The folks they help really need support. |

That's right, the Instituto has run out of UFCW hogs to honor but it's double-duty UFCW trougher Treasurer Dan Rush has a solution: make up a new award (in this case honoring his father, known as "Jimmy the Mooch"). Not such a great community service honor.
Rush continues the tradition by getting his non-union daughter UFCW Local 5 "scholarship" $$$, which of course are DUES from UNION MEMBERS! The Instituto Laboral de la Raza might try an outside audit of it's finances, considering it's Treasurers' proclivity for scams, such as the handicapped placard he uses. |

thanks, Laboryes for the welcome.
I've enjoyed perusing this site and catching some of the inside info that most members never see. That said, I was just letting off some steam and probably can't elaborate without getting my buddy in hot water. Just to add fuel to the fire, I wonder who at the Local 5 (from the LM-2 2009) totaled a company vehicle? While I hope there weren't serious injuries to anyone, you have to wonder at the circumstances. For me, it would be a great hardship to lose my transportation. For this person, no doubt another company vehicle was provided. Ah, the perks. |

Was it pre happy hour or post happy hour when the accident occurred? _________________ "When people refuse to obey, then democracy comes alive." Howard Zinn |
