I was raised and educated as Catholic as the Irish can be, but my mother and her family are Chippewa (Ojibway)---Sault Ste.Marie Tribe---and since we're Bear Clan, I got quite an earful from both sides. As you might expect, I spent a fair amount of time in the principal's office because I offered a separate but equal point of view.
I grew up in the Greater Chicago area. You'll not hear many nice things from our native lore about Father Marquette, and the rest of the "missionaries". To hear my grandmother tell it, they weren't happy with furs, food and women---they wanted our children and our souls. And they spent years after years trying to wipe them off the map; bad treaties, disease, Indian schools and far-flung reservations to boot. And still they had kept their culture, and taught it in the face of Christian domination.They kept their language even as they could be punished for speaking it. When I get to the other side of the lake someday, I will first give thanks for this life, and then ask God what He was thinking when He created all this diversity without giving us a method to embrace it . Until then, I have to take the best of both worlds I have lived in, and hope to bring my ancestors' honor.Whatever comes to pass will be no matter what we believe, or disbelieve. But maybe, if we are decent people in the meantime, it won't matter what the end time is. _________________ ...a dream lives on forever... |
