I'm not sure that you'll see 400+ units of living space bulldozed no matter who's involved and how much they could get out of the space if something else was built there. The site of the townhouse/condo has access problems even with the road connection to Wilson - so it wouldn't be good for emerg vehicles.
The MTO site is the likely location. I haven't heard of any other. The politicians and bureaucrats just have to go through the motions of consulting with the Jane/Finch, Weston/Lawrence communities that will see their current hospitals closed - to make it look like they care. Cliff, Joe and the boys have known for a number of years now that this area is high on the list for redevelopment and that the corner property is going to be worth a pile. Downsview Park is already driving property values in this area up (eventually this will be one of the highest demand areas in the city for residential real estate (look what proximity to High Park has done for the old stockyards neighbourhood). They are betting that their crappy condos will be worth a pile no matter what they look like. For the next 2 years (until they reach the deadline for registration) they'll sit around and collect occupancy fees (the equivalent of rents) from the "owners". At about $1200/month you do the math. Some of the owners will bail out at some point while others might be inclined to sell their units back to the developers. My guess, however, is that the boys and their associates have actually bought up more than a few of the units and are waiting to flip them when all those young professionals show up. I notice in the news release about the construction of the new hospital that there's going to be an "innovative" financing scheme - all from the private sector. I watched the Hospital annoucment video, now I may be too old and this will be lost, but does anyone else recognise David Caplan?
I'm pretty sure he is actually Flounder from Animal House.

I can't understand the legal speak too well, but I can tell you that the 'units' referred to on LEVEL 11 (top right) are not condo units. We're talking about the roof with the cell-phone tower-'box' that has had a lease with the hotel since the Kelly days... and whatever other crap they allow to sit and radiate from up there. My favorite schematic is LEVEL A which makes me all warm and fuzzy knowing that the Pothead Tunnel still exists and is still cylindrical. With a road going overhead, this tunnel should get a lot more use. I kinda hope that they keep the night-club black lighting. Instead of normal condo security, maybe they can position a couple of bouncers at each end. The nightclub itself seems to have been sectioned off into 4 units (6,7,8,9)... which just breaks my nostalgia-loving heart. The closest condo elevators can be seen on the south-west side of unit 6. Take a couple minutes to imagine the walk with groceries from a parking spot to a unit on the Keele wing. I'm sick with laughter just thinking about it. Also keep in mind that the tunnel goes DOWN into the basement. It is not a straight-across tunnel. It DESCENDS. It goes DOWN. So it's possible that you and your groceries might have to go from the back end of the 3rd floor parking garage, down three flights of stairs (unless they install an elevator  ) to street level, then take a tunnel DOWN into the basement, then take an elevator up to whatever floor, and then walk around two wings to get to home sweet home. I'm tired. You all ok?
Final comment... There are recommendations in those documents about getting insurance coverage over and above whatever the condo corporation itself has. GET THE EXTRA INSURANCE!!! INSURE EVERYTHING TO THE MAX!!! INSURE, INSURE, INSURE!!!! ACTS OF GOD, ACTS OF JOE, WHATEVER, INSURE!!! FORGET SPENDING ON THE DAMN BABY DIAPERS, THE INSURANCE IS MORE IMPORTANT!!! Hello everyone,
I hope you are all enjoying this fine weekend. It's been a little while since I've had good news to spread and well..... I guess it's gonna be a while longer because I only have more bad news today. There are rumblings now at IW regarding EXTREMELY HIGH closing fees. What is it today that stops certain business people from having a conscience? I am highly concerned about this. I may be hearing incorrectly and my sources may be bad but from what I understand, HELL IS NOT A NICE PLACE! If my sources are indeed correct, isn't that something to be scared about??? I will admit that even though I believe in God and fear Him, there have been times when I have wanted to see others experience pain or heartache as a result of something they may have done to me that caused me pain or heartache BUT, the little voice inside stopped me. The little voice inside is supposed to remind us that we could go to hell for DOING.....certain things. Okay, so we think it, but we don't DO it. That's forgiveable........as far as I know. * Gauging people's eyes out..... * Charging for condos initially built with NO PERMIT!!... * Overcharging for poorly built property... * Overcharging on closing fees..... For all these and more, the builders of Independence Way should (in my opinion)......GO TO HELL!!!....... Judgement Day is coming. |

While we wait for the Cliff Evans-and-clan court date which is soon to arrive (October 11th is the latest rumour), let’s regale our readers with another story.
On first read the story might seem to be an imaginative stretch… but imaginative Mondo-stretches have always led to and uncovered bizarre links and ludicrous-yet-true stories. If only the RCMP could come up with shit like this! From a pedophile priest to money-laundering union boys, from Canada’s Enron (which never actually stopped), to Canada’s largest-ever cash robbery, from shady front-men to shady front-men to um… shady front-men. They have one thing in common… Toronto’s own MONDO CONDO is at the heart of the story! And to further our mind-bending thoughts on the subject, UNCHARTED.CA PRESENTS: THE LEGEND OF MOUNT MONDO CEMETERY- MOB DESERT OF THE NORTH Read any good mafia-crime books lately? If you happen to come across one or two or three (among others) of the ones focusing attention north of the US border, you might soon understand that Canada is the place to be if you’re anybody who’s somebody. Once you start ‘understanding’, only one question will continue to keep you up at night… Where the fuck are the bodies? Seriously, it’s a good question! You see, we’re talking about a shit-load of bodies here. You think only the guys in the States had to deal with the bodies? You think the bodies are less of a hassle up here? This ain't Vegas! We got no desert! We got a lotta land and trees, but we don’t have a quickly accessible one-stop-cadaver-drop spot. BUT WE DID IN THE EARLY 70’s!! Here’s how it went… Montreal-Hamilton-Windsor… also known as the tri-fecta of Canadian border mob-towns. What connects them all? A MAJOR HIGHWAY! And lucky for us mondo-readers, what sits in the hub of that connection? That would be THE CITY OF TORONTO!… or more precisely THE MUNICIPALITY OF NORTH YORK!… or more precisely THE LAND SURROUNDING HWY 401 and HWY 400!… or even more precisely… THE MONDO CONDO AT 2737 KEELE ST.!!! But the Mondo Condo building didn’t exist in the early 70s. 
Hmmm... property records indicate that the ‘family’ of friends and developers had ownership of the property at Keele and the 401 as early as 1968 (much earlier is possible), but curiously didn’t start to build a hotel… until 1975. So one must wonder, and keep on wondering (if only I still smoked weed), what the land was being used for during that span. Of course we all know that THE BODIES at that time had to go somewhere! OK, let’s get the bodies out of Montreal, let’s get the bodies out of Hamilton and let’s get the bodies out of Windsor. How about we drive out of the city and to the spot where every-scum-knows-your-name… MOUNT MONDO CEMETARY!!. ...a really interesting ‘plot’ (pun intended) of land located right off the 401 highway (and down the street from the airport). Can you picture it? That barren desert-like land on the north side there. Bring your shovel and lime. After a while, imaginative sources tell us that Mount Mondo Cemetary became quite the popular meeting spot. Even when a body was not available. They still came to pay their respect and to take a piss on an old friend or two. There soon became a growing need among the living visitors… food and shelter. Hasty funerals can be a tiring experience and it was pretty obvious to all that a hotel/eatery/bar/whore-house fronting the Mount Mondo Cemetary was a good idea. There was the added in-joke of the Keele-facing hotel representing a giant gravestone… each window representing a body on site. Who's gonna make the next reservation? Ba da bing ho ho!! You can still see the Mount Mondo gravestone from miles away as you drive in on the highway. But alas, after many years and with the construction scheduled up front, a rather full cemetery out back, the friends decided that Mount Mondo Cemetary would have to stop accepting packages. Exept for a final one! Yes, those old rumours provided by a certain insane Mondo Condo contributor are in fact true… good family friend JIMMY HOFFA was the last package delivered to Mount Mondo Cemetary back in the summer of 1975, just as the hotel was being built... straight across the Michigan border, through Windsor and down to his final resting place at 2737 Keele St. Hey it's a better lead than they've gotten in 30 years! Now there was still the problem of a bunch of dead guys to keep buried. Great idea… pave over them. build an above ground concrete garage to really pack 'em in nice! Notice the garage was well isolated, well back of the hotel in the middle of a large piece of land (if you look at the corner today, you need to know that whole corner block from Wilson to the 401 was one piece of land and that the garage was placed in that particular spot for lookout and isolated no-prying-eyes reasons... in our unhumble opinion). Damn, this story is getting too long. Fast forward to 1992. Reopening of the hotel. The rumours were of hauntings in the former nightclub (it was known as the CANARY COTTAGE in the late 70's/early 80s) Oh my dear Lord... "CANARY" COTTAGE. I just got it!! 
I need a break... I'm laughing too hard! I just got the mob inside-joke after all these years. A CLASSIC!!!! "CANARY" COTTAGE!! Ok, so in 1992 it was a storage room and supposedly haunted. Any ghost story I tell about the 'canary' hauntings cannot possibly top "CANARY" COTTAGE! I won't even bother. Fast forward again... 2006. We sit here analyzing 30 years of this Mondo crap and two big things stick out...
Why? Is it possible that they know about the THE LEGEND OF MOUNT MONDO CEMETERY- MOB DESERT OF THE NORTH?? Good night to all.
