I thought about this ~ how to introduce Song For The Week. Originally, I'd spike with John Prine. however...

The Red Flag
Jim Connell

The people's flag is deepest red,
It shrouded oft our martyred dead.
And ere their limbs grew stiff and cold,
Their hearts blood dyed its every fold.

Chorus;
Then raise the scarlet standard high
Within its shade we'll live and die,
Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer,
We'll keep the red flag flying here.

Look round, the Frenchman loves it blaze,
The study German chants its praise.
In Moscow's vaults it hymns are sung,
Chicago swells the surging throng.

It waved above our infant might,
When all ahead seem darked as night;
It witnessed many a deed and vow,
We must not change its color now.

It well recalls the triumphs past,
It gives the hope of peace at last;
The banner bright, the symbol plain,
Of human right and human gain.

It suits today the weak the base,
Whose minds are fixed on pelf and place.
To cringe before the rich man's frown,
And haul the sacred emblem down.

With heads uncovered swear we all
To bear it onward till we fall;
Come dungeons darks or gallows grims
This song shall be our parting hymn.

I have to throw in a Murphys tune. This song energizes me (as punk rock should), but unfortunately part of it is a pissed-off feeling at the apathetic state of things today. I'm three decades old... can anyone find me a hero of my day?

Quote:
Dropkick Murphys
Heroes From Our Past

And so the story's told of a hearty group of men it's a tale of their triumphs and their woes.
Be it raids and melees ancient or the modern worker's struggle that inspires men to stand up for their rights.
And should we fall down by the wayside in this ever-changing world
we can look back to these heroes of our past.
With their staunch determination and ferocious iron will,
no tyranny would quell them in their task.

It's an age-old situation with an ever-present message:
that time and tide waiteth for no man.
So without fear of confrontation of the consequence of outcome,
it's for freedom and for happiness they toiled.
An in looking to the future,
we can see a better place where we can shake the yoke of tyranny for all.
It's been paved by generations who have gone now to their rest.
It's just remembrance of their dignity we ask.

Chorus:
So come on rally round this brave and valiant cause with tradition, pride, and honor at its core.
With swords drawn to defend stood stood these noble-hearted men Faugh-an-ballagh,
clear the way, me boys!!

Under perilous conditions with small hope of success they left behind the lives that they once led
and by virtue of their fortitude and single-minded strength they cleared the way for the people of today
so when we think back to our ancestors respectfully we hark
and thank the men whose struggle broke the chain it's a long road up ahead of us
let's forge on while we're strong and leave our mark of honor once again

So the story has been told and it comes now to an end.
It's setting any era, any land.
When abusive tyrants force the hands of matters great or small,
it inpires men to stand up for their rights.

Here is a song for the "ChickenHawk Heros of New",,,,,

Come you masters of war
You that build the big guns
You that build the death planes
You that build all the bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten all the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
While the death count gets higher
Then you hide in your mansion
While the young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

Dylan.[/i]

I know I'm posting a second song in less than a week but I gotta congratulate somebody. Screw the Grammys, this is the big story... http://edition.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Music/02/09/music.sales.reut/index.html

We know that no CD collection should be without the Murphys, Beatles/Lennon, Queen, Harper, Stripes, Ozzy, Floyd, Coldplay, etc., but he's mandatory!

This is dedicated to the old MFD crew. Lately, the uncharted chatter has a much more confident air to it (which should scare many)... a sort of long-awaited shift in power that will only get more noticeable and fun as the weeks pass.

Quote:
BARRY MANILOW
"I Made It Through The Rain"

We dreamers have our ways
Of facing rainy days
And somehow we survive
We keep the feelings warm
Protect them from the storm
Until our time arrives
Then one day the sun appears
And we come shining through those lonely years

I made it through the rain
I kept my world protected
I made it through the rain
I kept my point of view
I made it through the rain

And found myself respected
By the others who
Got rained on too
And made it through
When friends are hard to find
And life seems so unkind
Sometimes you feel so afraid
Just aim beyond the clouds
And rise above the crowds
And start your own parade
'Cause when I chased my fears away
That's when I knew that I could finally say

I made it through the rain
I kept my world protected
I made it through the rain
I kept my point of view
I made it through the rain

And found myself respected
By the others who
Got rained on too
And made it through

I made it through the rain
I kept my world protected
I made it through the rain
I kept my point of view
I made it through the rain

And found myself respected
By the others who
Got rained on too
And made it through
And made it through
I made it through

Union Sundown

dylan

Well, my shoes, they come from Singapore,
My flashlight's from Taiwan,
My tablecloth's from Malaysia,
My belt buckle's from the Amazon.
You know, this shirt I wear comes from the Philippines
And the car I drive is a Chevrolet,
It was put together down in Argentina
By a guy makin' thirty cents a day.

Well, it's sundown on the union
And what's made in the U.S.A.
Sure was a good idea
'Til greed got in the way.

Well, this silk dress is from Hong Kong
And the pearls are from Japan.
Well, the dog collar's from India
And the flower pot's from Pakistan.
All the furniture, it says "Made in Brazil"
Where a woman, she slaved for sure
Bringin' home thirty cents a day to a family of twelve,
You know, that's a lot of money to her.

Well, it's sundown on the union
And what's made in the U.S.A.
Sure was a good idea
'Til greed got in the way.

Well, you know, lots of people complainin' that there is no work.
I say, "Why you say that for
When nothin' you got is U.S.-made?"
They don't make nothin' here no more,
You know, capitalism is above the law.
It say, "It don't count 'less it sells."
When it costs too much to build it at home
You just build it cheaper someplace else.

Well, it's sundown on the union
And what's made in the U.S.A.
Sure was a good idea
'Til greed got in the way.

Well, the job that you used to have,
They gave it to somebody down in El Salvador.
The unions are big business, friend,
And they're goin' out like a dinosaur.
They used to grow food in Kansas
Now they want to grow it on the moon and eat it raw.
I can see the day coming when even your home garden
Is gonna be against the law.

Well, it's sundown on the union
And what's made in the U.S.A.
Sure was a good idea
'Til greed got in the way.

Democracy don't rule the world,
You'd better get that in your head.
This world is ruled by violence
But I guess that's better left unsaid.
From Broadway to the Milky Way,
That's a lot of territory indeed
And a man's gonna do what he has to do
When he's got a hungry mouth to feed.

Well, it's sundown on the union
And what's made in the U.S.A.
Sure was a good idea
'Til greed got in the way.

Here is Grammy Winner, you know - one of those ones' that just get a bottom line note.

Best Contemporary Folk Album
Fair and Square - John Prine
2005
Some Humans Ain't Human

Some humans ain't human
Some people ain't kind
You open up their hearts
And here's what you'll find
A few frozen pizzas
Some ice cubes with hair
A broken popsicle
You don't want to go there

Some humans ain't human
Though they walk like we do
They live and they breathe
Just to turn the old screw
They screw you when you're sleeping
They try to screw you blind
Some humans ain't human
Some people ain't kind

You might go to church
And sit down in a pew
Those humans who ain't human
Could be sitting right next to you
They talk about your family
They talk about your clothes
When they don't know their own ass
From their own elbows

Jealousy and stupidity
Don't equal harmony
Jealousy and stupidity
Don't equal harmony

(Spoken)
Have you ever noticed
When you're feeling really good
There's always a pigeon
That'll come shit on your hood

Or you're feeling your freedom
And the world's off your back
Some cowboy from Texas
Starts his own war in Iraq

(Singing)
Some humans ain't human
Some people ain't kind
They lie through their teeth
With their head up their behind
You open up their hearts
And here's what you'll find
Some humans ain't human
Some people ain't kind

Mothers, Daughters, Wives
Judy Small 1983
Craft Maid Music
1990 Larrikin Music Publishing Pty Ltd

Chorus:
The first time it was fathers the last time is was sons
And in between your husbands marched away with drums and guns
And you never thought to question you just went on with your lives
'Cause all they'd taught you who to be was mothers, daughters, wives

You can only just remember the tears your mothers shed
As they sat and read the papers through the lists and lists of dead
And the gold frames held the photographs that mothers kissed each night
And the door frames held the shocked and silent strangers from the fight

Chorus

And it was twenty-one years later with children of your own
The trumpet sounded once again and the soldier boys were gone
And you drove their trucks and made their guns and tended to their wounds
And at night you kissed their photographs and prayed for safe returns

And after is was over you had to learn again to be just wives and mothers when you'd done the work of men
So you worked to help the needy and you never trod on toes
And the photos on the pianos struck a happy family pose

Chorus

Then your daughters grew to women and your little boys top men
And you prayed that you were dreaming when the call-up came again
But you proudly smiled and held your tears as they bravely waved goodbye
But the photos on the mantelpieces always made you cry

And now your growing older and in time the photos fade
And in widowhood you sit back and reflect on the parade
Of the passing of your memories as your daughters change their lives
Seeing more to our existence than just mothers, daughters, wives

Chorus

And you believed them

We Shall Overcome

We shall overcome, we shall overcome
We shall overcome some day
Oh, deep in my heart I do believe we shall overcome some day

We shall all be free, we shall all be free
We shall all be free some day
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe we shall overcome some day

We shall live in peace, we shall live in peace
We shall live in peace some day
Oh deep in my heart, I do believe we shall overcome someday

Mr. Green

Bob Dylan, as Bruce Springsteen/Neil Young have together probably made enough money to feed this world X2.

Apart, Mr. Dylan is an artist of the past, as in Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen.

Now, look at John Prine. Here we have a folk musician - 60 years - said 'f' the system years ago.

Ode to Music. How much peddling of new music can I post here.

Howw hell, keep me posting.

Bread & Roses

If we don't have our dreams
What do we live for
If we don't have our dreams
What did James Connolly die for

Chorus:
Look up the sky is burning
With blood that workers shed
And we'll carry on the battle
For roses and bread
Oh bread and roses
Rose and Bread
We'll carry on the battle
For Roses and Bread

He was born to organize
That's what James Larkin lived for
For being a union man
That's what Joe Hill was killed for

Chorus

With dreams in solid steel
That's what Mandela lived for
For dreaming of what might be
That's what Allende died for

Chorus

Let's dream that dream of dreams
Of Life Without Sorrow
And maybe our dreams
Can build a better tommorw

To You and Yours, A Day to celebrate the Saint of Patrick. Mr. Green

I first heard this song when I answered my telephone the other day. I picked up the receiver, said hello and Andy sang the whole damn wonderful thing to me. It was music to my ears.

...and there was sanctions, lawsuits...

(sung to the tune of the “Thunder Road” - sound track from Robert Mitchum's Moonshiners).
Quote:
PLUNDER ROAD by Andy Mathison

Come listen to my story
For I will tell it all
Of how some crooked leaders
Made a noble union fall
Haggard was the leaders and Ghag he was his toad
And when they hit the Local's loot
They called it 'Plunder Road'.

Chorus:
And there were blunders, blunders
All over Plunder Road
Sweetheart deals with bosses
And expense accounts to load
And there was moonshine, good times
That left an empty purse
Let's hope the Mounties catch'em
If Big Steel don't do it first.

A weekend up in Sun Peaks
Or maybe Vegas Town
On a junket in Miami
They'd just lay that plastic down
If their pockets got too empty
They'd just raid the H.E.U.
With not a thought for lesser pay
They need them union dues

Chorus:
And there were sanctions, lawsuits
All over Plunder Road
Harassment charges pending and
Assault charges galore
And there was splurging, gouging
All on the workers' tab
With not a thought for justifying
All the fun they had.

On the twenty-fourth of June
In the year two thousand five
The Steelworker brass told Ghag
You better make those records jibe
You paid a mortgage from the strike fund
Paid off a shill or two
Bought knick-knacks at the Disney Store
With hard-earned union dues

Chorus:
And there were hearings, jeerings
From an angry rank and file
How dare you take our money
To line your pockets all the while
And there'll be cheering, rejoicing
From each Mill-worker throat
When justice bangs the gavel down
And gets old Sonny's goat
When Justice bangs the gavel down
And gets Ghag's greedy goat.
