I am convinced the ufcw goofs act like they do and do the things they do because they're inept to the enth degree. Brawn over brain takes care of their short term needs - screw the membership.
I didn't think I could be surprised at ufcw's stupidity any longer. I was wrong. Our experience with ufcw 1518 this week proves that everyday is a new low they all can reach. The locals are spinning so badly from the employer's oppressive charge and not one of them have the wherewithall to take them on. Oh wait it's not about taking them on. The employers and ufcw made a pinky swear to work together. The employers disarmed ufcw and now ufcw is crying foul. "You promised" cried ufcw 1518! "Fuck-you" said the employer. _________________ Free speech is the whole thing, the whole ball game. Free speech is life itself. - Salman Rushdie |

Here's where this all gets so ugly siggy, the rules of engagement have changed. This idea that we can be partners is just plain bullshit, it always was. Any efforts to work together were long-term nothing more than for a way for employers to hold workers at bay while they had the cards. Yup, there has always been/will perhaps always be ebb and flow in employment relationships. There were times when working with employers was mutually beneficial: But only if you did so from a position of power; they had to know you were able to crank it up and hurt them if they reneged. Unforunately, todays labor movement has been, as remote viewer so aptly put it, institutionalized. They have become clown-like card-board cutouts, callous caricatures and paper tigers of the worst kind. Employers are having their way with workers and almost all of the unions are reeling from the effects. The answers lie in the hands, minds, hearts and souls of the workers. The boys in control (there's an anomaly) have no idea how to find ways to inspire the membership. They have built dynasty's where they are so far removed from the rank and file, there is just no connection. Can they/we ever get back there? Maybe, but i sense the guys who have padded their own pockets (while members are being starved into the streets) won't do it voluntarily. They will either have to be replaced and booted into retirement, or become afraid enough to make massive changes in how they work and are paid. Local 588's reform effort may well be the UFCW's last real hurrah for meaningful change. If the challengers were to be successful; toppling a local of that size and with that level of business unionism could inspire countless others to stand up and speak out. Employers appear to have it all going for them. They are doing as they please and the only thing that will stop them is an aggressive, militant rebirth of worker empowerment. Sadly, the biz unionists look like they still think these faux friendships will be their salvation. If so, pass the kool-aid Jim, lets toast our good fortune to have friends this kind. _________________ If we don't do it, who will? |

Every member I have spoken with thought very highly of Doug. The most common thing I heard about Doug was "He was real and down to earth" Doug has been out in stores relating to workers one on one! Why? because Doug is living the same worker hell as the rest of us! Doug is not some silver spoon fed son of a union president that made 500,000 a year! Doug has had to make his way in life by working just like the rest of us unlike Jacques Loveall who has been handed everything his entire life! Doug is getting into these stores shaking members hands and talking real life issues Jacques stays locked up in the 588 palace or is lunching with politicians. Most members in their entire carieers will never even meet Jacques Loveall(no loss there)they will just continue to pay their dues so Jacques can continue to lead his glutenous life style that his daddy laid out for him! Members are learning who Doug Slaydon is and they are liking what they are seeing! [/quote] _________________ "When people refuse to obey, then democracy comes alive." Howard Zinn |
