UFCW members who work at Loblaws, Zehrs and Fortinos supermarkets across Ontario have begun voting on a tentative collective bargaining settlement that has been two years in the making.

The terms of the tentative deal, posted on the web site of UFCW Local 1977, are similar in many respects to a proposal that the UFCW rejected in 2005.

The most significant gains appear to be for the union itself and include a $36 million contribution by the company to the UFCW's troubled pension plan, a five cents per hour worked (by each member) contribution to its training and education fund and a further one cent per hour worked donation to its dental trust.

Stay tuned for a fuller analysis of yet another great feat of UFCW bargaining.

Has Wayne told Loblaws where to send the cheque,
1/ To the Caymans or Bahamas?
2/ Defence fund?
3/Florida?
The only thing for sure is the rank & file will not recieve any increase in their benefits////

Well at least the Loblaw payoffs are getting higher. It proves that the UFCW boys are getting even better at negotiation table!

Maybe Loblaws feels they're going to get screwed in a CCWIPP class action anyway and think this helps in some way? Rolling Eyes

Oh, and I really like the name of the new stabilization slush fund. Very creative!

Has anyone taken the time to work out what the signing bonus plus increases work out per hour over 6 years? what will be top rate at the end of 6 years?, what is the top rate now and what will be the top rate in 6 years? the new rank & file will be getting these rates, I am oh so glad that when I was active in ufcw we always tried to negotiate for the future and all rank &file present and future.
to go from 2 year agreements to 6 year agreements with a payement in the first and second year I do not see higher negotiated pay outs only money in Loblaws pocket for the last 4 years plus lost hourly increase for ever.
And of course the ufcw will not be accountable for 6 more years, at the next meeting table a motion all paid union reps to recieve $1000. payment for 2007 and 2008 with no other increase for the 6 years, could be interesting///// with all the increased union dues you will be in a great strike position in 6 years and Loblaws will be making a ton of profit.

Someone took too much dough out of the pension plan. The benefits had to be reduced. Somone took more money out and the plan had to be reduced again. More money flowed out and is flowing out. So what's the answer? Keep pouring larger volumes of money into the plan.

This is Loblaws second big infusion. The first came in late 2002 and it bought them a Sweetheart of a deal. It bought them the ability to open a contract midterm and gut it. It bought them a pledge of secrecy and if not that at the very least they got the machineheads to waive democractic processes.

$36 million is little more than spit in a bucket. It will keep the authorities away long enough for memories to dim and neredowells to be far away by the time the shit hits the fan.

The Star article ended with sage advice. The members will have to take civil action if justice is to be served and if any part of the hundreds of millions is to be recouped.

Embarassed What are you fellow workers doing? If you
people are licking your lips at the signing bonus
well here is a wakeup call for you, sure that bonus
realy looks good on paper but now ask your self this
will this be taxed before we receive it and if so how
much tax will we lose in taxes? Will we have to claim
it as an income at years end? Well I can tell you
from past wars with the tax man here in Canada because
one Company I worked for here in Ontario as every Christmas I would receive a forty hour pay tax free
as a bonus. I got away without claiming it at
years end for three years but in the forth year
Uncle Sam nailed my ass for tax fraud and it caused me
a lot more in taxes than the bonuses were worth.

So if you think that is a good contract because there is a great signing bonus than sign but the only
winner in this fucked up game is UFCW and the biggest
Weasel (a sly and treacherous person deceit) of all
time Wayne Hanley and his pack of sewage Rats. This
jerk off leader wants this contract signed sealed
and deliverd so he can collect this $36 Million
dollars to save his buddy Fraser and himself.

Say no to the contract and watch him squirm in the
shit he really is. Say yes to it and you are once
again saving the asshole from the judge's hammer at
Old City Hall's court. So think about it will there
be a pension for you when you retire? Not likely but
your vote on this contract decides this pricks
future It's time to take a stand because there is
nothing in this contract for you the Membership.

36 mill! That's gonna buy some cool assets eh? Here's a Beauty!!. and it leaves a few million for golf memberships and travel expenses.

Don't feel bad though, if a few of you pool your bonuses you can buy this monster ...on Goulds Pond Road. Only a few minutes to Bay Roberts
