Chavez, the Devil, Chomsky, and Us

Quote:
I think what made Chavez seem so peculiar to so many people is that what he did was, in fact, incredibly peculiar. To stand up to the classist, racist, sexist, authoritarian leader of the U.S. and to mince no words reviling his immorality, was indeed incredibly peculiar. So let’s all stand up to power and privilege and take the stigma out of doing so. It is part of removing the smell of sulfur from the air.

The AFL-CIO Foreign Policy Program and the 2002 Coup in Venezuela

Quote:
Because of the apparent connection between the oil workers' union--the key union of the labor center Confederation of Venezuelan Workers (CTV in Spanish) and whose leader, Carlos Ortega, was the president of the CTV--and the coup attempt, and the long-standing ties between the CTV and the US labor center, the AFL-CIO, questions have risen about possible involvement of the AFL-CIO in the coup attempt.

I guess it's just dandy for punks like you to slam and slander George Bush because you don't like how he does things, but when I slam a wanna-be terrorist groupie like Chavez because I don't like how he does things, my brain cells must be mis-firing Rolling Eyes

I'm not entirely sure what to make of Chavez. I don't see him as any sort of terrorist threat, but more like one of those citizens who speaks passionately before the city council each week, because they are worried about decisions that might affect them personally. They are using strong words to try and prevent policies that will require undesirable action later.

I mean, let's face it. Bush goes after oil, and he doesn't care how many people die in the process. That should concern any leader of a nation with a lot of oil. That doesn't make Chavez a terrorist. It makes him proactive, and yes, even courageous, when speaking this way at the UN.

On the other hand, I've spoken to people who lived in Venezuela, and Chavez does not appear to be a good man. He's a dictator. How ruthless a dictator, I have no idea. But he is definitely not fit to be a hero of the American Left.

Sometimes the bad guys say the right things. That's just the way it is. In his coherent moments even Charles Manson has spoken words of genuine wisdom. But just like no one gives that any credibility, I wish it wasn't Chavez speaking to the UN about the threat to world peace that Bush poses. I wish someone like Blair or Putin would grow some testicles and say it instead.

I don't think anyone really considers Hugo a hero by any means. It's just he is a thought initiater and I personally believe he says exactly what so many other leaders around the globe happen to think, but haven't as you mentioned, grown the balls to say!

Seems as if Chavez has yet another ally down south with the election of Ortega as President of Nicaragua.

I thought I would point this out as a matter of interest: I just noticed in the forum that this thread has had 666 views.

Your observation made me look,wm; so it's no longer 666 Twisted Evil

Since I already spoiled that evil irony; I noticed that in Ecuador, Rafael Correa; a friend of Hugo Chavez is leading in the presidential exit polls. Ecuador has generally been one of the most conservative Latin American nations so it is somewhat surprising. Bush is going to have a lot of "leftists" to overthrow in the near future.

Hugo Chavez has successfully defended his post and secured another six year term as Venezuela’s president following an election held on Sunday. During his acceptance speech, Chavez reprised his pet name for President Bush, saying his victory was “another defeat for the devil.”
