The UFCW isn't the only union with democracy issues. Hell look at this post from our friends at Future Of The Union:
UAW Local 292 Suspends Democratic Union Elections by Todd M. Jordan

President George W. Bush has suspended all U.S. elections in November in order to save money for the United States of America. All elected officials including Governors, Mayors, City Council and Senators will be appointed by the President. What if this was on the front page of the USA Today? Well, that is what has happened to the membership of UAW Local 292, but it wasn’t the US government or Bush who made the announcement, it was our so-called “democratic” union.

The local UAW president and shop chairman with the help of their caucus has suspended all union elections and will hand pick people for all union positions at local 292. As those currently in office transfer to General Motors or take the Special Attrition Program they will personally select their replacements. After years of previous betrayals and failures it should come as no surprise to the membership.

Just plain frightening isn't it. What lengths will they got to stay in power? Does democracy matter? Shameful, just more plain old fucking shameful behavior.

Thanks Bill! No we are all in the same leaky boat I'm afraid. Our affiliation and country doesn't really matter. These guys and gals at the UAW are fighting daily and they are to be commended!

Can't put my finger on it but there's something about a closed circle and stars... anyone else feel it? I suppose there's no way to do it without a brand eh.

Verbally abusing members while at a union meeting must be a new trend for union officers eh?

Everywhere we read lately you are hearing about union officer abuse!

Is this world losing it? Or are we rank n file awakening from a deep sleep and not liking what we are seeing?

In the last week we have heard about the 588/8 abuse then the local 135 abuse on the rank n file and now this with UAW

Is it possible that a real worker movement is growing and the powers to be have no clue how to handle it?

I see it as an awakening LY. The word seems to fit our situation much better than the words of yesterday. A social awakening is exactly what we are going through in my opinion. We've slept uninterrupted for so many years. We've been softly lulled to sleep by consumeristic ideals and we've allowed the growth of a dependency on an elite few who have told us they have our best interests at heart. The corporate/biz-u proponents have successfully sang us a soft lullaby and we have reacted exactly as they predicted. The corporate political hogs, along with the biz-u swine's siren song has led us into dire straits. But now (due in large part to the interweb), we are awakening from our pleasant dream and are finding ourselves in a nightmare. This nightmare has us up on the edge of the bed, shaking our heads, rubbing our eyes, and wondering if the corruption and the injustices are real or imagined! I'm sorry to say but we are no longer dreaming....it is very real!
