North Carolina Kroger workers are ready to fight to protect affordable health care. Members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 204 at stores in the Raleigh-Durham area will be voting to reject company demands that would make health care unaffordable for workers and their families. If Kroger is unwilling to provide workers with adequate health care and wage increases, a strike may become a reality as early as mid-August.

In their last contract, workers bargained for corporate contributions to their health care fund. Because local Kroger workers have remained relatively healthy in the last few years, there is now over $4 million in that fund--$4 million that is already invested for health care for workers and their families.

But corporate greed has surfaced. Kroger wants to raid that fund themselves and then force workers to pay an extra $1 million out of their own paychecks towards health care. This adds up to an unsustainable amount for Kroger workers and their families.

Sorry Jeff, I have to work. BP? Mr. Green

I read somewhere that this dispute or negotiation "deadlock" was going to meet a mediator. I can't seem to find the story.

Sorry again Jeff. It's happened time and time again. People vote to strike and they're shut down by a process - I'll eat my words if this comes out differently.

In the infamous words of Maynard G Krebs: WORK? Oh wait maybe you were asking if i wanted to go to North Carolina, not to work.

Sorry to say Jeff, this trip won't be made, and frankly, won't be necessary (IMHO). This fight will be the precursor of things to come. As the old Hatfield/McCoy battle used to heat up, it prompted the inevitable question: are ya with us or agin us?

Watch this one come down to each side making huge concessions to find middle ground. Then each can play peacock, puff up their chest and proclaim victory. Some kind of niceities about working together.

The company has flat out said this offer wasn't their final, duh. Hope i'm wrong, hope the boys are ready willing and able to stop the givebacks and make members proud. I hope i win the lottery too.

Wow! I just read a letter from the president stating that "team members" should have affordable health care. It just seems that the So. Cal. win back contract negotiations next year might hit a snag. When is the last time the union ever won anything back we lost? What about Easter Sunday?

You said it CHA CHA--

What about the 50% of the Dues paying UFCW Southern California Union Members--that don't get any medical insurance for themselves or their familiies!
