Wal-Mart workers in China's Fujian province have voted to join ACFTU. Success came after a two year union organizing campaign which focused on Wal-Mart's 60 locations.

Unfortunately ACTFU is one of the worst examples of a "yellow union" anywhere in the world today. I fear that the greatest beneficiary of this will be Wal-Mart.

It would be great to see workers in the world's (soon to be) most powerful economy become legitimately organized, but I don't think they're even close.

Under Mao, the Chinese constitution provided for independent trade unions; but in reality, they were only allowed if they furthered the goals of the Chinese Communist Party.

In 1982, China banned the formation of independent unions claiming that the successes of the Communist state had made them unneccesary. They created ACTFU as a means to control the formation of democratic unions. In fact, many rank and file Chinese labor activists have conveniently disappeared--assumably locked away in prisons --or worse.

Great story Rogead!!

Ironically, in 1979---the "Retail Clerks" union merged with the "Meat Cutters" union to form the UFCW.

In many ways--the creation of the UFCW--has been the U.S. and Canadian mirror---of China's ACTFU----

Of course this is only my opinion!

I certainly agree that there is some structural parallel between the formation of ACTFU and many of the practices of North American business unionism. One of the interesting aspects of China’s ban on trade unionism lies in the fact that it occurred at roughly the same time in history that North American corporations began to feverishly exploit the Chinese labor force. Sam Walton first developed the Chinese manufacturing-to-North American retail supply lines in the mid-1970s. In the end, China’s fraudulent claim to socialism combined with its horrendous record on human rights bodes poorly for Chinese workers.
