Quote: OTTAWA - Willie Lambert isn't trying to fool anyone, least of all himself.
Back in April, he announced his plan to challenge long-term Canadian Auto Workers leader, Buzz Hargrove, at the union's convention in Vancouver next month. He's the first person in the 21-year history of the organization to openly challenge an incumbent president. ''We've become too accommodating, made too many concessions to the corporate agenda,'' says Lambert, a 44-year-old second-generation union member and chairman of his CAW unit at Oakville Transit. ''It's very troubling how far we've drifted away from our founding philosophy and aspirations.'' He concedes that the odds of defeating Hargrove, who's been at the helm of the union since 1992, are slim but, then again, Lambert is no stranger to losing, either. Lambert has been defeated in two attempts to become president of the Ontario Federation of Labour, three stands as a federal NDP candidate and one run as a provincial candidate. ''I always accepted right out of the gate that I probably wouldn't win those elections,'' he concedes, ''but I think it's really important to take part in the debate anyway. It's better to do something than to just mumble and grumble.'' He adds: ''Someone has to step up. There's always a cost or a risk, but that doesn't bother me. Not anymore.'' His ego may be able to withstand a knock or two for the sake of principle, but Lambert concedes his wallet is considerably less resilient. ''It does cost me money every time out,'' he says. ''I have to pay all my travel costs to get to Vancouver and haven't been able to get around to talk to as many locals as I'd like because I have to work and I have limited funds. Sometimes, you just have to suck it up.'' His rival, by contrast, has the benefit of an extensive network of internal and external contacts. Not to mention a travel budget. ''Buzz Hargrove has quite a machine at his disposal, and that kind of entrenched power is really hard to fight. A lot of people have a lot at stake with the status quo,'' says Lambert. ''Buzz says he welcomes the debate and the challenge, but there's been quite a bit of pressure exerted from the administration to shut me out wherever possible. Even in my own local it's been a problem for me.'' In fact, his concerns about the lack of democracy within the CAW mark just one of his proposed areas for reform. ''It should be one member, one vote, and a lot less space between the union leadership and the rank-and-file,'' he insists. ''In the end, delegates have no responsibility to the local they represent at the convention. Grassroots members should have a more direct role than that.'' thanks R_D, I wondered where Deidre McMurdy went after her stint with global. Interesting switch of directions. I think she anchored the market reports and now, here she is critiquing biz-u. Maybe not such a stretch after all. Quote: Lambert has already pledged that if he's elected next month, he'll work to ''re-mend fences'' between the union and the NDP after Hargove ''made a mockery of all our values.'' _________________ Free speech is the whole thing, the whole ball game. Willie is an NDPer all right, although very much on the left of the party. Before Buzz started playing footsie with Paul Martin, the CAW used to give "critical support" to the NDP, endorsing it at election time but also trying to work within the Party to move it further to the left. I expect that's what Willie has in mind as far as "re-mending" any fences goes.
I think the NDP is really a side issue, though, in this election. The bigger issues seem to be the union democracy issues Willie mentions above, as well as whether the CAW will keep offering concessions or start to stand more strongly against corporate demands. The article also mentions Willie's support for the A.G. Simpson workers this past May, who Buzz was all too willing to cut loose. I see that the CAW convention is in Vancouver this year. If you get a chance, you should try to go check it out. I met Willie when he ran for OFL president a few years back and I was impressed by him. He could probably use the support, even if you can't vote for him. Last edited by robbie_dee on Tue Jul 25, 2006 11:58 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Quote: The fact that the National representation would not fully assist the Unit committee in this threatened time for the members, and wilfully not acknowledge the Saturday May 20th midnight strike date, as they were legal is a huge affront. I'm sure we already know the answer but there are times I would like to hear what leaders like buzz et al have to say, for them to friggin' explain the logic that denies support for members who are obviously putting everything on the line for working rights in general. I suppose I need to hear because, no matter what, it's really difficult to believe that your own organization will turn on you for a dollar. But it will and has and still is. I'm not holding my breath, but I wish Willie luck, if nothing else because some change is better than no change and it may be a step closer or a window. At least for some of us. _________________ Free speech is the whole thing, the whole ball game. Free speech is life itself. - Salman Rushdie |

This article from "Fightback" discusses some of the attacks Lambert faced even from within his own local.

lemme guess, buzz asked willie to be the best man at buzz's upcoming nuptuals and the best man gift was such he just couldn't say no.
That is some kind of 180 willie! _________________ Free speech is the whole thing, the whole ball game. Free speech is life itself. - Salman Rushdie |

Quite a story indeed. Here's Buzz playing the ultimate celebrity proposing marriage to his chick from the podium.
I have to say I almost barfed up my Shreddies this a.m. reading this late-breaking news. I guess since the convention didn't have any excitement, what with the election being sort of a crock of crap, Buzz felt he had to compensate with a bit of cult-of-personality. This is so pathetic. Really, I can't even begin to express my revulsion. It was bad enough when pics of Buzz and his broad wheeling around in a rag-top made the msm last year to announce his decision to take another run at the leadership of the CAW, but this crap? Who does this aging celeb-wannabe think he is? Mel f**king Gibson in a somewhat more sober state of mind? What's really galling is that in a number of recent msm articles Hargrove laments the state of the ms unions an pledges to organize the unconvinced - hell or high water. What do you suppose he has in mind to capture the hearts and minds of today's working humans? A Buzz and Denise version of the Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson internet porn thing? Oh shit, I hope not. You suck Buzz. _________________ Time is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. Truth is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. Quote: Do not blame him.
He could not find one single delegate who would nominate him. Talking about manipulation. He had to withdrew. That was the only reason. Precisely -- The fraudulent unity of fraudulent union. Don't know the brother but was he just figuring he might have a constituency in the reformers but about as shallow as Hargrove and grasping for his own power failing, he decided discretion was the better part of self-serving?
Was he threatened and in fear of whether he'd have continued breath if he stuck it out? It does make you wonder... Dropping out is one thing, dropping out and endorsing Hargrove -- really there's a story there that ain't been told. _________________ "I'm not a humanitarian,I'm a hell-raiser" -- Mother Jones |
