Rather than debate the question if you are a candidate, let me just offer a few words of advice to folks who are interested in running against local union officers.

First it is clear the internet is one the best and cheapest resources available to a union member running against an incumbent. The other of course is face to face discussions with members. Going to where they work and introducing yourself with a card or flyer and your website url gives them a chance to meet you. It also drives traffic to the site where they can read what you are all about.

Where this becomes tricky is how you present yourself after that. I often go to sites where there are stories or things going on that are about the ufcw. The problem is, if they are hard to navigate or a problem to read or sign on, i stop. Ease of use is critical.

This one, while it may sound picky, is a must do in my book. Learn to write. Creating sentences and paragraphs that are clear and well structured help get your message across. Learn to spell. While everyone has an occassional slip of the finger on the keyboard, check spellings if you are not sure. To this day after having written well over a million words on line, i often reach for my Franklin pocket spelling ace. An occassional typo will not hurt you; constant mistakes will make it difficult for people to take you seriously.

Develope a positive message about who you are and what you stand for. Members need to see the reason to support you. You'll always get those who hate the guy in office, but that will never be enough to win an election.

Finally, the most important skill you can learn, and the quality that will set you apart, is learn to listen. Most union leaders have become so full of themselves they spew on thinking they need to prove they belong there. I found we could succeed best when we took what members wanted, put it into play and got results.

Simple stuff, but some fast keys to running a good campaign.
