I apologize but I am feeling a little bit nostalgic this morning! Must be the rain! I dedicate the following link to those who didn't come home and to those who were fortunate enough to make it back to the states but still have never been able to find their home.
Quote: Dear America,
The days are pretty peaceful, but the nights are pure hell. I look up at the stars at night and it's hard to believe they are the same stars that shine over you in the world you live. You would be amazed at how much a man can age on one patrol! But I have to believe that it's far better to fight and die for freedom than to live under the oppression and fear of communism. Like they say over here, "This is the only war we've got, so don't knock it! I miss you all so much! Love, Dinky Dow PS: Can you send some kool-aid? Water here tastes like shit! _________________ "Speaking the truth in times of universal deceit is a revolutionary act." George Orwell |

Sorry AT but I just have to say this. Dinky's message conflicts with what I think I know about you. I understand how there would be a circumstantial connection - that moves even those not subjected to war atrocities.
But, from Dinky's own scribbles, I couldn't help but think that he had the right idea, that fighting for freedom from oppression is indeed the only valid war, but that he was in the wrong place battling the wrong enemy and it never occurred to him. He lost me (and I think himself) when he said "fear of communism" _________________ Free speech is the whole thing, the whole ball game. Free speech is life itself. - Salman Rushdie |

He lost me (and I think himself) when he said "fear of communism" Oh you are so right siggy! I apologize for the cryptographic scribbles. I still blame it on the rain or maybe it's the ringing in my head that cm mentioned! Dinky Dow is just a compilation of any number of GIs who were there. The scribbles were just quotes from a variety of the letters in the video. And you are right that the real war is the fight for freedom from oppression. The "fear of communism" stands for the misdirection of that era just as "fear of terrorism" is the misdirection of this era. _________________ "Speaking the truth in times of universal deceit is a revolutionary act."
