Labor boss sued twice, accused of sexual harassment

Joshua Stewart / December 28, 2016

The San Diego Tribune

Excerpt:

The head of an influential labor union has been sued by two former employees, including a woman who said she was pressured into an ongoing sexual relationship with the union boss.

The other woman said she was fired after she was incorrectly suspected of being on the wrong side of a political issue.

In their two separate complaints against United Food and Commercial Workers Local 135 and union president Mickey Kasparian, two women described a workplace where the labor leader intimidated employees to the point where they were too scared to complain. Four additional women who did not sue but also worked for the union gave similar descriptions of their time working under Kasparian.

The former employees who have sued, Isabel Vasquez and Sandy Naranjo, are being represented by attorney Dan Gilleon, who represented some women that accused former Mayor Bob Filner of sexual misbehavior and harassment.

Respected Latinas Step Forward with Shocking Claims Against UFCW President Mickey Kasparian

By Brent E. Beltran / January 6, 2017

Excerpt:

In her complaint Naranjo also accuses Kasparian of using degrading and derogatory comments in reference to some of San Diego’s leading female politicians and labor leaders but not towards their male colleagues.

The complaint states that Kasparian frequently used the word bitch in reference to 80th District Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, Escondido City Councilmember Olga Diaz, and Unite Here! President Brigette Browning.

He also openly referred to San Diego County Democratic Party Chair Francine Busby as “stupid” and a “dumbass.” And would tell his staff that State Senator Connie Leyva’s only achievements were her “tits.”

Classy guy that Kasparian!

Labor Union – and Its Leader – Promoted Equality

By Rosalyn Hackworth | January 3, 2017

Excerpt:

I had the honor of serving as the secretary-treasurer of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 135 until my retirement in June. I would not have had the opportunity to serve in this capacity had it not been for Mickey Kasparian’s recommendation to our executive board. Not only am I a female, I am a very proud African American.

I could easily ignore all of the articles and media coverage regarding the allegations against Kasparian since I’m no longer a UFCW employee and no longer live in California, but it would be wrong.

Community Campaign Against Accused Sexual Harasser Mickey Kasparian Continues

JANUARY 20, 2017

UFCW headquarters site of protest in support of brave Latinas

By Brent E. Beltrán

Excerpt:
The relentless campaign being waged by supporters of Sandy Naranjo, Isabel Vasquez, and Anabel Arauz continued Wednesday night at the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 135 office in Mission Valley for the quarterly membership meeting.

Naranjo, Vasquez, and Arauz filed separate lawsuits against UFCW Local 135 president Mickey Kasparian accusing him of many things including gender discrimination, sexual harassment, and retaliation. Also named in all three complaints are the union itself and in Arauz’s filing, Richard Barerra, secretary-treasurer of the local.
