Quote: A news story and column by Iranian-born analyst Amir Taheri in yesterday's National Post reported that the Iranian parliament had passed a sweeping new law this week outlining proper dress for Iran's majority Muslims, including an order for Jews, Christians and Zoroastrians to wear special strips of cloth.
According to the reports, Jews were to wear yellow cloth strips, called zonnar, while Christians were to wear red and Zoroastrians blue. Sam Kermanian, of the U.S.-based Iranian-American Jewish Federation, said in an interview from Los Angeles that he had contacted members of the Jewish community in Iran - including the lone Jewish member of the Iranian parliament - and they denied any such measure was in place. "But to the best of my knowledge the final version of the law does not demand any identifying marks by the religious minority groups." The National Post's irresponsible reporting of the Iranian government's non-existent intentions to compel non-Muslims to wear insignia indicating their religious affiliation is a particularly good example of how the corporate media spreads disinformation in the hope of fanning the flames of intolerance against official and unofficial enemies of the United States and its new-found ally to the north.
This wasn't reported as a rumour or a possibility, according to the National Pest, a law requiring the wearing of the insignia had already been passed. Quote: A news story and column by Iranian-born analyst Amir Taheri in yesterday’s National Post reported that the Iranian parliament had passed a sweeping new law this week outlining proper dress for Iran’s majority Muslims, including an order for Jews, Christians and Zoroastrians to wear special strips of cloth.
According to the reports, Jews were to wear yellow cloth strips, called zonnar, while Christians were to wear red and Zoroastrians blue. The Simon Wiesenthal Centre and Iranian expatriates living in Canada had confirmed that the order had been passed, although it still had to be approved by Iran’s “Supreme Guide” Ali Khamenehi before being put into effect. It seems that the story was based entirely on a report from a source who turned out to be full of shit. The Pest reported that it got confirmation of the story from the Wiesenthal Centre and some Iranian guys living in Canada, no efforts appear to have been made to confirm the truth of the report by contacting knowledgable officials within the Iranian government including representatives of Christians and Jews. This is obvious as, the day the story broke, all concerned denied that any such plans were in the offing and condemned the "Pest" for running the story. Notwithstanding the lack of research and verification, the Pest ran the fallacy on its front page below a huge photograph of two German Jews and the yellow Star of David badges they were forced to wear by the Nazis. This kind of gratuitous sensationalism is really offensive given the fact that there was no truth to the story and the Pest Editors should have known that if they'd done their homework. It was buttessed by some incendiary commentaries and more pics of Nazi-era yellow badges. But what was even more galling is in the days that followed, as knowledgable Iranians and and others of every persuasion lined up to say "it ain't so" and as it became painfully apparent that the Pests had been played for fools, they continued to "play" the story in the guise of reports about how various experts were saying it wasn't true. Each of these stories again repeated the untrue allegations and featured photographs of the Nazi-era yellow badges. Yesterday the Pest finally issued an apology and admitted that it had been duped by some guy who wasn't returning their phone calls. Did the National Post editors really get hoodwinked? I'm skeptical. Their failure to follow up with sources who could credibly confirm or deny the passage of a law of this kind leads me to believe that they picked up on some bullshit with the potential to stir up a lot of anti-Muslim (and particularly anti-Iranian) sentiment and ran with it. Many more people read the fallacy than read the apology and the impact of the story is such that many are sure to wonder if such things are lurking around the corner and if maybe the Iranians really are capable of such things. Preying on fear and insidiously spreading suspicion and intolerance is the hallmark of the corporate media. There's an informative and very readable book by Al Franken called "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them". It contains some great examples of major media stories that are nothing but pure fiction. If you think the corpo-media doesn't bullshit you think again. The National Pest just showed us how it's done. _________________ Time is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. Every single day we are bombarded by the corporate spin and the sooner we move away from the left/right, liberal/conservative propaganda, the sooner we create our own people driven media in my opinion. There are so many of these webs of deception, it would be almost comical if it weren't so pathetically harmful to our people. Just another example, immigration is a big issue, so the powerful elite running our msm decides, "Let's push stories about
AZTLAN and the Reconquista Theory. And we'll use material from a white supremacist group to illustrate our point! _________________ Dreaming is the door to the unimaginable! |
