Costco's entry-level workers are getting a raise

Applying for an entry-level job at Costco just got more appealing.

CNN Money / By Ahiza Garcia

March 3, 2016: 5:09 PM ET

Costco (COST) said Thursday that it will raise its minimum wage for existing and new entry level workers to $13 or $13.50 an hour -- beginning in March.

It's the first time in nine years that Costco has raised its minimum wage, CFO Richard Galanti said during an analyst call. Previously, the rate was $11.50 or $12 an hour.

"We think this will help, and it's important to do," Galanti added. "We want to be the premium at all levels. ... And frankly in some markets, this is a physical challenging, a physically challenging job. You're on your feet, you're lifting cases, you're pushing carts at these entry level jobs. And so we thought it was time to do it."

Costco's highest paid workers make around $22.50 an hour. According to Galanti, it takes a full-time worker about four years to reach this rate.

Employees at the top of the pay scale will receive a 2.5% raise this year. Many Costco employees also receive health benefits and pension plans.

Costco employs 205,00 people with 117,000 full-time workers and 88,000 part-time employees.

Related: $10.10 minimum wage struck down in Birmingham, Alabama

Costco is one of the country's largest retailers -- second only to Walmart (WMT), which has also recently raised wages.

Earlier this month, Walmart gave 1.2 million employees a raise from $9 an hour to $10. It was part of a two-step increase announced last year.

But these raises don't come cheap -- they cost the company $1.5 billion this year and $1.2 billion last year.

Minimum wage hikes have recently been instituted by retailers, cities and states across the country. And, movements such as the "Fight for $15" have put pressure on companies and municipalities to institute a living wage.

On Wednesday, Costco reported an 8.7% drop in quarterly earnings and a 4% increase in same-store sales.

Costco also reported an overall increase in cardholders from 82.7 million to 84 million.

The company said it plans to open 30 new warehouses this year -- up from 2015. This last revelation comes as companies are shuttering stores nationwide. Walmart announced in January that it will close 269 stores around the world -- 154 of those are in the U.S.

Begs the question as to What in-the-hell-are-our-UFCW-Leaders-doing?

@ Team Nunes,.....

With today being Sunday, March 6, 2016 and Local 5 had their last SaveMart /Lucky informational meeting on Thursday, March 3, 2016, how about sharing with us the details of said meetings, including your Plan to end the SaveMart / Lucky Contract Siege here at UFCW Local 5!

As we approach the 16 month anniversary, YOU guys do have a Plan............ Right?

I was checking out Local 5's website,...

...and noticed that YOU guys did take the time to mention / share the following,.....

Local 5 Lucky Members to Educate Public About Company

March 10, 2016

Local 5 members working at Lucky-SaveMart are set to educate the public about the companies labor relations practices. Lucky demanded concessions from their workforce in 2012 and made them permanent in November 2014.

Members have been trying to make ends meet despite these concessions, that no other companies have, for years now. Appeals to the Labor Board have been exhausted.

It is time the customers find out how the boss is treating the workers who serve them every day.

Got to wonder what the big guy is thinking right-about-now re: Local 5's latest revelation? Based on the I.U.'s outrageous position over the past 15+ months with their "Article 23" edict placed on Local 5's contract with SaveMart / Luckys, will the I.U. be on board / approve of this recent move by Local 5?

More importantly, will our Local 5 SaveMart / Lucky Members be protected by participating in any of the above actions?

@ UFCW I.U. President Marc Perrone,..... and you say what?

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR LOCAL 5 LUCKY-SAVEMART MEMBERS

March 13, 2016

Lucky-SaveMart representatives have contacted the International Union and said they desire to meet. According to the International Union, they claim Lucky-SaveMart has an improved economic offer. International President Marc Perrone has advised Local 5 to withhold any member actions pending a meeting and a possible vote on the offer from Lucky-SaveMart.

Article 23 of the International Constitution was cited by President Perrone to halt Local 5’s planned actions, as a result, our actions planned for Sunday March 13 are cancelled. Local 5 will keep Lucky-SaveMart members fully updated through the website and in the stores as new developments occur.

After Team Nunes wrote the following,.....

UN-Lucky
Six Year Wage Freeze
We’ve Had Enough!

We are the “un-Lucky” employees of Lucky Stores. We have not received a wage increase in six years. We granted the employer multiple concessions during the Great Recession to help them regain profitability. Those concessions expired in August of 2014. Instead of rewarding our loyalty and recognizing the financial sacrifices our families had to endure, Lucky made the takeaways permanent!

Wage freeze for 6 years in Bay Area’s hottest economy ever
Hundreds of employees reduced by $5 an hour
Loss of vacation time
Loss of holidays
Loss of holiday pay
Loss of Sunday pay
Loss of graveyard shift pay

Lucky has saved $75 million due to our great financial sacrifices and has become very profitable. Moreover, they have been granting big bonuses to management. If you agree that this is wrong, help us change the company’s attitude. While shopping today ask the manager to stop the takeaways and pay a living wage. You can also reach the company at 1-800-692-5710. Make sure you let the company know how you feel about the way they treat their employees.

Regarding the above begs the question, who is really running / in charge, at UFCW Local 5?

Is it the UFCW I.U.?

or

Is it SaveMart / Luckys?

Obviously it isn't these there (3) guys!

As Team Nunes uses the FMCS / UFCW I.U. to provide Political Cover for their 16+ months of failed leadership, the bottom line is, after the April 6, 2016 meeting at the FMCS HQ, the reality , is how much will "any new" UFCW Local 5 SaveMart / Lucky Deal "mirror" the following "most recent" UFCW Local 8 / SaveMart / Lucky Deal?

California's top court tells employers to give workers a chair

By: Maura Dolan / LATimes

April 4, 2016

Excerpt:

On Monday, the California Supreme Court told workers like Bowlin — perhaps millions of them — in effect that they could take a load off.

Bowlin had joined a class-action lawsuit against the pharmacy chain, one of dozens filed in California during the last several years against corporations that required workers to stand. In a unanimous ruling Monday, the court clarified labor law in a way that is likely to make it more difficult for companies to deny workers a chair.

“There is no principled reason for denying an employee a seat when he spends a substantial part of his workday at a single location performing tasks that could reasonably be done while seated, merely because his job duties include other tasks that must be done standing,” Justice Carol A. Corrigan wrote for the court.

San Francisco approves fully paid leave for new parents

By Janie Har, Associated Press

The Mercury News

April 6, 2016

Excerpt:

SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco approved a measure Tuesday making it the first place in the nation to require businesses to provide fully paid leave for new parents.

Advocates say the issue is gaining momentum across the country much like the debate over a higher minimum wage.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted unanimously in favor of the measure after supporters said six weeks of fully paid leave is needed because too many families can't afford to take time off after a child is born or adopted.

Save Mart-Lucky Update

April 7, 2016

Lucky Update 4-7-16

Local 5 President John Nunes and two representatives of the International Union met in San Francisco on April 6, 2016 to continue discussions with Save Mart/Lucky stores. Present from the company were the Director of Save Mart operations and one of the co-Presidents.

It was the first time the Union had met with Save Mart’s Director. The meeting was designed to discuss the ongoing issues separating the two parties and to discuss opportunities in which a middle ground can be achieved to reach a fair and equitable agreement for Local 5 members, while allowing the company to remain profitable and continue to grow.

The company presented an overall picture of their fiscal health since the employee concessions began in 2012, in which the company has been progressively improving. Save Mart also provided information showing they are reinvesting most of the cost savings from the employee concessions to renovate and reinvigorate the sales in the stores.

Local 5 and Save Mart are to resume discussions within the next two weeks. Please continue to access the Local 5 website for updates. Please remain strong and united as we all continue to fight for a fair contract reflecting your hard work in making Save Mart/Lucky successful.

I was particularly interested in the following.....

http://ufcw5.org/local-5-clarifies-save-mart-lucky-position-on-status-of-contract/

April 22, 2016

Save Mart Lucky Update

April 22, 2016

Local 5 Clarifies Company’s Position on Status of Contract

Save Mart/Lucky recently placed a misleading communication on their website, which some store managers downloaded and posted in the store. The communication stated that the imposed agreement was found to have not violated the law, according to the National Labor Relations Board.

Local 5 informed our Save Mart/Lucky members of labor board’s decision several months ago and this is nothing new. Save Mart/Lucky then wrongfully connected the labor board decision to the following statement;

“The dispute between Save Mart and Local 5 is over and the implementation of the contract is now resolved.”

The labor board decision had nothing to do with the ongoing dispute over the imposed concessionary agreement. Local 5 continues to successfully fight the employer on several ongoing levels. No labor peace will exist until Save Mart/Lucky comes to accept the fact that the best path for their success and profitability is to provide a fair and equitable contract for their employee’s hard work and economic sacrifices made during the Company’s financially hard times.

Discussions have continued with the Company, Local 5 and the UFCW International Union over the imposed concessionary agreement. Please access the website for further updates.

Seriously, as Team Nunes allows the SaveMart / Lucky Contract Siege to pass month # 17 (contract siege began on 11-16-14), Team Nunes has the audacity to state the following!

Local 5 continues to successfully fight the employer on several ongoing levels.

@ UFCW Local 5 Secretary, Treasurer Jack Landes, Local 5 President, John Nunes and Heir Apparent, Michael Hannebery, a.k.a. the Triple Clown Act (T.C.A.),...

How about providing all of us in detail just exactly HOW.... you've successfully fought this Employer on several ongoing levels, including providing us all with what exactly you've successfully accomplished on behalf of our SaveMart / Lucky Members over the past 17+ month(s) here at Local 5!

From where I'm sitting, the only thing the three (3) of you have demonstrated over the past 17+ months is how pathetically,.......

the three (3) of you really are!

Local 5 and Save Mart are to resume discussions within the next two weeks.

With today being Saturday, April 30, 2016, we are now at three (3) weeks and counting since Team Nunes "allegedly" held their last meeting with the Company on April 6, 2016!

Checking out UFCW Local 5's website,.....
http://ufcw5.org

It appears that nothing happened with respect to any negotiation meeting between Local 5 and SaveMart / Luckys within the previously mentioned promise from "Team Nunes" of allegedly resuming negotiations within the next two (2) weeks!

@ UFCW Local 5's Executive Board,.......

.........as we approach May 16, 2016, month #18 since the (Local 5 SaveMart / Lucky Contract Siege began on 11-16-14), it's way past the time to end,......

Company Digesting Local 5 Call for Contract Resolution

Local 5 President John Nunes and a representative of the international union had a conference call with SaveMart-Luckys CEO and Board Chairman on Friday April 29. The purpose of the call was to answer management questions about Local 5’s position on getting to an agreement that can be ratified by the membership.

The company continues to cost out the offer for settlement and debate it internally. The time for calculation and debate is closing. When an answer is received from the company the membership will be notified and appropriate next steps will be taken.

Somewhere within the "digesting process", the following UFCW Local 8 "recent" SaveMart / Lucky deal(s), will represent the "menu" / "main course" the Company will be feeding to Team Nunes & Team I.U.!

Keeping in mind of course, that any & all improvements to the above mentioned deals, agreed to by the Company for UFCW Local 5, Local 8 & Local 648 will automatically receive said improvements to their previously ratified deal(s)!

In my view, by the Company Digesting Local 5's Call for Contract Resolution , is all inclusive re: Local(s) 5, 8 and 648, as it pertains to the entire digestive process!

Just exactly how is the Company doing digesting Local 5's call for a Contract Resolution?

After 17 days you would think that the Company had more than enough time to accomplish that goal by now!

@ Team Nunes,....and you say what?
