Some of you may remember UFCW Local 8-GS’s election nomination fiasco in 2008 ?
After filing my complaints with the UFCW International and the DOL the final out come for Local 8 was nothing more than a slap on the hand The question now...was all the time and the paper work worth it? Was the Department of Labor’s decision a victory for us members involved or just another slap in the face for working people paying dues and being shut out of their “own” union? I got my answer a few weeks ago when I received my Local 8 Voice of Action Vol 25, No.2, Late Spring issue 2011. There it was "General Nomination of Officers" for Local 8 officer elections for 2011. See UFCW 8-GS Nomination Notice I have to say it was rather satisfying to see that Local 8 had to post the nomination with out trying to hide it in multiple, similar looking magazines just to fool the members. Was it all worth it? Hell yes! Knowing that Loveall had to post the notice of nominations properly and send to “all members” was rewarding in it's self! You know his ass was chapped because he had to play by the rules! Will any of the Local 8 members make use of the efforts made by some of us in 2008 and run for union office? Most likely not, but if they want to it will be just a little bit tougher this time for Loveall to play dirty pool when it comes to officer elections and for me that makes all the effort of 2008 worth it's weight in gold. It looks like the Local 8 elections won't be the only worry on Loveall's list this year. It appears that the Loveall run rep union FAIR is under attack by some within the UFCW. They're calling themselves Let's Change F.A.I.R. See here: http://letschangefair.com/about-our-candidates/ Quote: Ownership
As an organization which represents members, FAIR should operate as any other labor union. The leadership should look like a True Representation of those who belong to it—Local and International staff from a variety of regions and backgrounds. If you were to go to the FAIR website today, what you would find is a video of Jacques Loveall , president of UFCW Local 8 Golden State on the front page along with John Heise’s latest blog (who is also an officer in Local 8 GS). If you look even closer you will find several other Local 8 GS representatives as part of the Executive Board. The current “Slate” proposed by the incumbents would add even more positions. At what point do we as members stop allowing a single group or individual to control our future? As Business Reps and Organizers in the Labor Movement we would never accept this from one of the employers. Isn’t it time to hold ourselves to the same standards we hold the companies of the workers we organize and represent? Accountability The leadership of FAIR must be held accountable for the language in contracts bargained throughout the country. For example, Local 1036’s staff in Southern California were not given an opportunity to vote on a contract because of language which would prevent FAIR from interfering in a merger between locals, while leadership then allowed similar language to be put in a contract in Seattle. The ultimate result was that the staff of 1036 ended up merged into a larger local without a contract and immediately lost their union status, decreasing our power and membership as a whole, while in no way upholding the basic principals of union representation. The real reason for what happened in Southern California had more to do with the interests of UFCW Local 8 GS because they wanted a bigger piece in the merger and had nothing to do with any of us as members. In fact we lost members in the end. So Cal & Nor Cal negotiations! Local 8 elections! FAIR Elections! Now just might be the perfect time for some energetic young Local 8 member or members to hit the Loveall’s with another "Slaydon like" reform campaign. Quote: Nominations shall require the signatures of two persent, rounded down to the nearest whole number....(emphasis mine) One would assume that a democratic organization such as a labour union wouldn't be quite so skittish, less paranoid, less controlling, more democratic and "round" UP, instead of "down". Oops, my mistake, we're talking UFCW aren't we. _________________ Free speech is the whole thing, the whole ball game. Free speech is life itself. - Salman Rushdie |
