We need to be very precise re this issue. What it says is that on private property, leafletting, etc. can be limited to a certain degree and in certain ways.
In some instances, grocery companies actually own the property and store; the Marina Safeway [where I work] is one such example. In most cases, however, stores are leased and on properties shared with other businesses. On such sites and in such circumstances, the rights of assembly, speech, etc. apply.
The applicable case is the "Pruneyard" decision.

Is this case a loss? You bet. Is it the "end of the picketing/leafletting world"? Not hardly.

Just for the record, one of the [two or three dozen] candidates for Mayor of San Francisco has had a card table, folding chair and an attache case bike-locked together in the front of the Marina Safeway just outside the entrance [Laguna St. side] for the past 5 or 6 days; his sign is stuck in the ground in the rock garden.
Evidently this candidate campaigns during the day and into the evening, then leaves his sign, table, chair, campaign literature [with a rock holding down the lit] and the attache case overnight, ready for the next day's performance.
I applaud his effort and participation in the political arena. I applaud Safeway's store and corporate management for forgoing the exercise of their private property rights under RALPH'S decision.
I also have taken photographs to commemorate this event, which may prove especially if Safeway undertakes to limit or restrict our UFCW informational or other activities in the event of a "labor dispute". Cool
