President Hansen Named one of Supermarket News' "Power 50" in 2010

UFCW International President Joseph T. Hansen ranks number 41in the magazine's list of the 50 biggest power players in the supermarket industry.

The article credits Hansen and the UFCW with being "smack in the middle of just about every major issue roiling the country--and by extension the industry."

Please check out the following link for the complete story as UFCW International Union President Joseph Hansen, achieves Hulkster status as one of Supermarket News’ Power 50 in 2010:

Hold on for a second…………, if my memory serves me correctly, back in January 2008, President Hansen made headlines out here in Northern California.

So what happened and or changed for President Hansen to go from a “Labor Failure of the Year” to the “Hulkster” / “One of the Power 50 in 2010”, in such a short time???

You decide………

SN Power 50 for 2010

This year's Power Players are reinvesting in their companies to spur growth in an uncertain economy.
How does Joe Hansen president of a labour union (for lack of a better word) fit that profile? In which company is he investing and what is he investing?

You know what, it doesn't matter. Finally hard working ufcw members' hard earned money has catapulted one of ours to the top of the heap. It won't be long now before Joe comes back for the rest of us.

The thought of Brother Joe in a pink feathery boa is, somehow, quite appealing. Confused

You slay me Sharyn! Brother Joe forgot about us and left us in the dust a long time ago! He's got a whole other vision these days.....

The undocumented workers! They ask way fewer questions and have much fewer "rights" to demand! The perfect dues paying machines....they pay with no say!

That's more likely closer to reality eh. The sad truth is, however slight the benefits, without union these workers would indeed be worse off.

The bigger grim reality is we have to ask how much of the abuse that vulnerable workers face is a direct result of ufcw's ineptness in the first place. How different would it be had ufcw not sold the proverbial farm? Therein lies the grind.

It makes me physically ill to think how far workers have fallen largely thanks to corrupt machineheads with dollar signs in their eyes. But great to hear Hansen's business is doing well in hard times.

Why yes I do JB. I have a hard copy and also some of the "blood red" copies we handed out at the protest. I don't have an electronic copy because I had to delete some old stuff in my puter to make room for the new that may be coming in the near future.

Would you like a copy of the flyer?

Would uncharted have an electronic copy Ly? Give me a clue what to look for (title, name, subject, year) and I'll rummage thru the hundreds of pdf's to see if it's there.

I don't think so Sharyn this was all stuff that was on groceryworkers.org web site. What I can do is fax you the hard copy and we can make a link and replace the old groceryworkers link?

WHITE HOUSE APPOINTS UFCW PRESIDENT JOE HANSEN TO ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR TRADE POLICY

WASHINGTON, DC-Joe Hansen, President of the 1.3 million member United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) has been appointed to the United States Trade Representatives Advisory Committee for Trade Policy.

The UFCW represents workers in the meatpacking, food processing, poultry, food distribution and retail food sectors of our economy. As the economies of developing countries grow, demand for food products made in the US-particularly meat-is increasing. Hansen is committed to ensuring that American farmers, workers, and responsible businesses and manufacturers are not locked out of these emerging growth markets. Hansens experience in the global union movement, and his role negotiating contracts with multi-national meatpacking, food processing, and grocery companies gives him a unique perspective and the capability to ensure the voice of working people is heard in trade agreements that affect their livelihoods.

I am so honored to accept this appointment. Food and meat industry representatives have long served on this Advisory Committee; I want to express my appreciation to President Obama and Ambassador Ron Kirk for nominating me as representative of workers in these industries. I look forward to working with Ambassador Kirk on trade policies that create more jobs in the U.S. by increasing our food and meat exports; and on improving working, living, and environmental standards for workers and their families both here and abroad-standards that will also benefit consumers, businesses, farmers and manufacturers, Hansen said.

The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) represents more than 1.3 million workers, primarily in the retail and meatpacking, food processing and poultry industries. The UFCW protects the rights of workers and strengthens America’s middle class by fighting for health care reform, living wages, retirement security, safe working conditions and the right to unionize so that working men and women and their families can realize the American Dream.

WHITE HOUSE APPOINTS UFCW PRESIDENT JOE HANSEN TO ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR TRADE POLICY

Nothing more than, political good deed in order for the Obama, administration, to insure continuously financial support from the UFCW to the Democratic Party

It’s like the old saying, you scratch my back I scratch yours.

It works like this;

The union gave them millions of dollars, with the clear understanding that in return the UFCW would gain the approval/passage of “employee free choice act” the politicians can’t deliver on what they promise….So to motivate them, the UFCW gave U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis the Title of Labor Leader of the year 2010; the politicians still can’t deliver, now they are between a rock and a hard place, got to do something to keep the cash flow; “EUREKA” WHITE HOUSE APPOINTS UFCW PRESIDENT JOE HANSEN TO ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR TRADE POLICY.

In my opinion, with this administration the Employee Free Choice Act will not pass.

UFCW PRESIDENT JOE HANSEN NEW CHAIR OF CHANGE TO WIN

Teamsters President Jim Hoffa elected Secretary-Treasurer

WASHINGTON, DC --- The Change to Win (CtW) Leadership Council elected Joe Hansen, United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) President, as its new Chair. Hansen replaces Anna Burger who earlier had announced her retirement from CtW where she served as Chair. Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa was elected CtW Secretary-Treasurer.

Change to Win unions, the UFCW, SEIU, the Teamsters and Farm Workers represent millions of private-sector unionized workforces in the U.S. Change to Win members work in the fastest growing industries in the country in service-sector jobs, including transportation, health care, food production and retail, among others.

The following is a statement from Joe Hansen:

“Change to Win is focused on ensuring that workers in the various service sectors have jobs with wages and benefits that can support a family. If these jobs are vital to the American economy, then service sector jobs should come with middle class wages and benefits.

“We know that a stronger labor movement is essential to the rebuilding of America’s middle class and that will be the primary focus of our work at Change to Win.

"We will continue our strategic work building strength for workers in our core industries.

“We will continue our advocacy on key public policy issues, including labor law, pension, and comprehensive immigration reform, food safety and health care. We are also committed to working with the Administration to ensure that the purchasing power of the federal government exercises wise stewardship of taxpayer money by promoting quality, family-supporting jobs.

“We will continue close coordination with our labor partners at the AFL-CIO on public policy issues. Both labor Federations share unity of purpose to address the crisis facing American workers.

Change to Win and the AFL-CIO will work together to make sure that candidates that support working families win in November.

The Change to Win unions are more inspired than ever to stand up for workers’ rights and make the economy grow again for working families through good jobs in every community."

James P. Hoffa, General President of the Teamsters stated: "The United States is the first country where a majority of its citizens joined the middle class. Labor unions created that middle class. No country in the world has ever had a strong middle class without a strong labor movement. And like all social movements, the labor movement was born fighting. Our work is far from over today, and Joe Hansen is the kind of leader we need in our fight to strengthen America's working families.”

Said SEIU President Mary Kay Henry: "Joe Hansen's determination to make sure that 5,000 Smithfield workers had the chance to vote for the union after 16 years is exactly the leadership we need to rededicate Change to Win to lifting wages for millions of private sector workers."

UFW President Arturo S. Rodriguez said: "I want to congratulate Joe on his new position, there is no doubt in my mind that he is the right person to move the organization forward. I'm sure that he will continue to ensure that Change To Win leads the way in developing new strategies, new programs and new efforts to effectively organize workers in the private sector."

PUT AMERICA BACK TO WORK FIRST

Statement by Joe Hansen, President of United Food and Commercial Workers International Union

WASHINGTON - In stark contrast to 2008, the election of 2010 will be remembered because the results were fueled not by hope, but by anger, frustration, and fear. Working people have lost jobs, homes, and life savings. Young people have delayed college, and older workers are postponing retirements.

Empty and inflammatory rhetoric that derides health reform as “Obamacare” and demonizes leaders as socialists will not right the imbalance in our economy or help working people make ends meet. Our politics must rise to the challenges we face and provide sensible legislative measures that ensure a foundation for secure and stable communities.

When our new Congress convenes in January, will Republican lawmakers continue to obstruct the legislative process—as they have over the last two years—and continue to walk away from their responsibility to help govern? Or will they join with President Obama in an effort to put America back to work?

Working families have been losing ground for three decades. Household income has stagnated. Productivity is up, but wages are down. Hundreds of thousands of middle class jobs have been shipped overseas. And many of our elected leaders, complicit with Wall Street greed, stood by and let bankers make and break the rules, and when their house of cards collapsed working families paid the price.

All elected leaders should take on their responsibilities to govern and turn immediately to the pressing issues confronting working America with bold ideas, creativity, and solutions. To move forward, our country needs a national agenda that begins with an honest conversation about restoring fairness to our economy, and generating good-paying jobs that keep families secure and America strong.

We need an agenda that, in the short term, provides security for the unemployed with an immediate extension of unemployment benefits.

We need a dispassionate approach to legislation and policies that recognizes that service jobs—retail salesperson is one of the fastest growing jobs in America—are the future of our economy and must become middle class jobs. We need to solve our broken immigration system, which would, if reformed, pump trillions into our economy and raise living standards for workers; create a sustainable energy program, and embark on infrastructure renewal that would put millions of Americans back to work.

American democracy goes beyond an angry vote at the ballot box. Working families care about building a better America because a better America means a better future for our kids and grandkids. The UFCW pledges to work with all elected leaders who are committed to restoring balance in our economy and rebuilding our middle class.

Incompetent and greedy union officials were unable to control the political process with the massive amounts of dues money raked off from their poverty stricken members. One again our drive towards our corporate union backed agenda has been set back.

At the UFCW, with our total disregard for democracy within our union halls is shocked that the American middle class has once again voted against our interests. Our tactics to demonize the opposition that has worked so well within our union halls has failed.

Once again we are unable to place enough bought and paid for politicians to do our bidding. Of course the fault lies at those over emotional voters who don’t know how to vote in our interests.

Our empty and inflamitory retoric has failed us again. We here on K street have to go out to our free three martinee lunch and think about how we can gain more for ourselves in these troubled times.

Just empty words from an empty organization that can't pull their nose out of the corporate ass long enough to realize that if we (the power to the corporate machine) get our fair slice of the pie the circle of life goes on for everyone! They seem to forget that it's our purchasing of their products that keeps that circle of their wealth intact. When we no longer can afford their products, and no longer see any use to give our money to an organization who gives no protection to working people the golden free ride dries up! What then for the fat cats at the top and their bottom feeder puppets within the UFCW?

We as working people will learn to survive, we always do! The big question is can the vultures on K St. do the same? And at what point do they begin feeding on each other?
