BP agrees with Obama to set up a $20 billion escrow. That's about TEN TIMES the initial request. What gives here? Obama's White House speech is uncharacteristically flat and ends with something like "God help us".

I understand that some of the Gulf and Caribbean is porous limestone with underground channels actually communicating far inland in Florida and similarly in the Yucatan. Deep water springs appear miles from the coast.

There are areas of volcanic activity in Aruba with fault lines running up the eastern seaboard of the US, one right through Charleston S.C.

The Oil Drum discussion on the surface looks very knowledgeable and the punchline I was searching was an idea of how long this leak may last if it can't be fixed. The answer is four separate deposits containing 2.5 billion barrels each!

At 150,000 barrels a day that is (I actually had to look up a billion, it's a thousand million)17,000 days or just over 45 years! Based on 2.5 billion divided by 150,000. If we even believe BP high end estimates of 60,000 barrels a day reported on the evening news that's a leak lasting 114 years!

I tend to believe the amount of oil deposits MUST be large; why else would they risk so much?

Obama is praying!

So how deeply involved is BP in this one????

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20100713/bs_yblog_upshot/did-bp-play-a-role-in-the-release-of-a-notorious-terrorist

BP has just announced it will begin deepwater drilling next month off Libya’s coast, and it is estimated BP could earn as much as $20 billion from the deal. It is shocking to even contemplate that this company is profiting from the release of a terrorist with the blood of 189 Americans on his hands."

With a new containment cap atop the damaged well, many are hopeful. But all is not well, after all.
National Incident Commander Thad Allen said Friday that the pressure within the cap is not increasing, as was expected.

The idea is that the pressure (in pounds per square inch [PSI]) within the cap should balance out between 8-9,000 PSI, which would show the well has maintained integrity. BP hoped to reach 9,000 PSI, but stated that well integrity would be maintained with 7,500+ PSI. Unfortunately for BP, if the pressure tops out below that level, as it is now at 6,720 PSI, this could be an indication of a sub-sea leak somewhere deeper inside the well casing, meaning the well has failed. One concern associated with this lower pressure is that it may indicate that the well has been breached, and that oil and gas are leaking out at other undetermined points.
Given BP's proven propensity towards lying, skeptics - who are consistently needed to keep BP's rhetoric in check - are also pointing toward other factors that could mean oil is continuing to spew into the Gulf near the well.

A Second Disaster Coming to the Gulf? Hazards Abound for Cleanup Workers

Jason Anderson, one of 11 workers killed during April’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, had warned his family that BP was pushing speed-up and straying from safety protocols.

Without a union to take his concerns to, Jason turned to his wife, Shelly. “Everything seemed to be pressing to Jason, about getting things in order, in case something happened,” Shelly confessed during an NBC interview.

Today, 27,000 workers in the BP-run Gulf cleanup effort may still be in danger. Some are falling sick, and the long-term effects of chemical exposure for workers and residents are yet unknown.

Illnesses linked to BP oil disaster

Quote:
"This is a young woman in good health, with good nutritional intake, no health issues, hates to take any medication, and ate only organic foods," he explained, "But shortly after going to the beach, where she was likely exposed to toxins, she developed respiratory illness and developed cancer within weeks. I think this was due to direct exposure to chemicals in the dispersants and VOCs."

Does anyone have any recent updates about what's going on with BP, the spill and the environment now? It's almost been a year - I can't believe how quickly the media forgets. I've been trying to find up to date information and can't find anything.
