As the years rolled by into the mid-Seventies, Dick gave back by serving as an official for the British Columbia Amateur Boxing Association, but by the Eighties he became a forgotten hero, and by the Nineties, he was just a faded memory for many.
Just a slight correction: Dick continues to volunteer his services at local fight nights serving as the glover, making sure the fighters' hands are wrapped and gloved in accordance with regulations. He often enjoys a pre-bout welcome into the ring as a local boxing celebrity.

Dick also served as an official at last year's 2009 World Police & Fire Games held here in Vancouver. He told me he got to watch some great boxing during the course of the international event that saw emergency responders from all over the world competing in a variety of sporting events.

It is good that Dick has been working at a local level, maybe it would be a good idea to attend the 2010 BC Golden Gloves in Victoria in April, so others
beyond Greater Vancouver can meet and greet him.

Maybe something could be arranged on a grand scale for
BC Golden Gloves alumni, the host club will be the
"Capital City Boxing Club" - they have a web site. Idea

I've decided to provide the text to my original email to VANOC that was referenced in Dick Findlay's letter to VANOC. It appears earlier in this thread and provides further, compelling evidence that there existed, in the words of BC Provincial Court Judge George P. Angelomatis, "..apparent collusion between management and union".

I'm still trying to find a link to the archived Feb/24/10 broadcast of Charles Boylan's "Discussion" program on Co-op Radio CFRO 102.7 FM which featured an interview with Dick and I -there appears to be some problems with Co-op's web site. I'll post the link as soon as I am able.

Update March/09/10 -

Last week I posted an ad on craigslist for a documentary filmmaker to produce a film documenting Dick Findlay's ongoing struggle. Here is a portion of the ad as it appears on craigslist:

Would like to find a talented documentary filmmaker looking for an interesting subject to chronicle; in this instance a former Canadian boxing Champion and Olympic athlete who, after leaving the ring falls victim to workplace bullying, is subsequently fired while injured and disabled and then denied access to justice and/or personal vindication.

This is the story of a man robbed of his livelihood, his pension and, worst of all, his dignity -and of his determination to get it all back.

The idea for such a film originated two or three years ago with uncharted's very own SharynS but was never proceeded with for a variety of reasons.

I am happy to report that my advertisement has garnered a terrific response from some award-winning independent filmmakers who have expressed keen interest in the project.

Central to the film's main focus will be an examination of the inadequacies of our labour laws to provide adequate protection to workers who fall out of favour with union representatives sworn to protect them from abusive employers; in this case Molson.

I hope to juxtapose Dick Findlay's ferocious determination as exhibited in his remarkable boxing career with his likewise refusal to 'stay down' in the face of a labour relations regime equally determined to 'count him out'. I plan to serve as both writer/narrator and producer for the film. As well, I may contribute some original music: I'm currently writing the film's theme song "You Don't Know Dick (Findlay)" -copyright Nicholas Hughes 2010

There's a great deal of work to be done -we're looking at probably 3-6 months including post-production -but first we're going to need some serious funding.

Next week I'll be looking into opening a bank account into which all donations to the Justice for Dick Findlay project may be funneled.

Anyone with ideas on raising the necessary $10,000 or more to complete this project should bring them forth here ASAP.

And what a brilliant script it would make as well.

It might be worth a shot to apply to the B.C Arts Council for project assistance.

Too right; the thing practically writes itself, Sig.
