In the interest of archiving some UFCW history, on behalf of uncharted.ca, here is a complete list of all previous recipients for the UFCW Western States Council Person of the Year Award. I will begin with the 1980 (our first) to and including 2009.

Now call me “old school”, but what is the rationale behind the UFCW selecting one of our UFCW Employers as our Person of the Year? As you can clearly see over the past 29 years, the UFCW has never selected a UFCW Employer as our Person of the Year.

Nothing against Mr. Piccinini, he may be the nicest and most sincere person in the world; however, I must say that I respectively disagree and I am very curious as to the complete thought process behind our UFCW Leadership in their decision to select Bob Piccinini as the UFCW Person of the Year?

Quote:
The UFCW States Council writes, “In recent years, he (Bob Piccinini) brought his relationship with the UFCW to a new level. He decided to cooperate with the UFCW’s organizing efforts and, as a result, virtually all of Save Mart’s stores and plants are now union”.

Interestingly enough, UFCW Local 8 benefited most on obtaining the bulk of the SaveMart non-union stores / plants / members throughout this “cooperative period” between SaveMart and the UFCW’s alleged “organizing efforts”.

OK, I am beginning to see the “bigger picture” now!

How about you? Who would you have liked to see our UFCW Leadership select as our 2009 Person of the Year?

Oh that is just so lame. There are thousands of worker activists, community organizers, even an inspiring president out there and they give the award to a corporate CEO! Who just happened to send thousands of new dues paying "units" their way?! That's just sooooo UFCW. What kind of contract did they sign with Mr. Peech-a-neen?

Well JB let me think on that for a second.............

Ok I got it! How about the 65 to 70 thousand UFCW members who rotted in the streets of Southern Cal during the 2003/2004 grocery strike?

Or how about the thousands of new Save Mart workers who start a slave wages and after union dues &
initiation fees are making less than minimum wage? Just to tell you how great these Save Mart contracts "negotiated"...(wink-wink-nod-nod) by the UFCW are I recently spoke with a woman at a Save Mart who is pregnant. She has about 2 years in with Save Mart. Under her UFCW/Save Mart health benefits it will cost her $7200 out of pocket to have this baby! Oh did I mention this woman makes $12 an hour?

How about honoring the real heros of labor, the people/workers who make it happen everyday? Without them/us these fat ass parasites of labor (including Piccinini) would cease exist!

Honoring some company CEO shows just how deep "in bed" the UFCW really is with all these grocery companies!

JB this is truly sickening that labor has sunk this low......excuse me while I go puke...

And here, my friends, we have the textbook definition of the term: "CIRCLE JERK"...
One of the few situations in which the right hand of the UFCW does indeed know what (or who) the left hand is doing.
Pass the butter, please.

That's where I was LY. great choices btw. I was going to suggest honouring a ufcw leader with a modest salary as person of the year but lucky for me I thought it through before posting my idea.

Here's a whole thought. A person doesn't really have to be a union member or pay union dues to cozy up to one's employer do they? People could pretty much cozy up and partner up to their employers on their own AND keep the advantage for their co-workers and themselves. Definitely something to mull over before signing up to become a ufcw member eh.

Ultra disgusting sell out and once again the old blind eye from ufcw international. Who knew.

Wow, imagine that out of all the UFCW employee's, they could not honor one.

It has to go to an employer or polition.

When I say employee, I mean somebody that works in the stores or wharehouse.

Following up on the 2009 UFCW Person of the Year, it is time to announce the 2010 UFCW Person of the Year.

2010 UFCW PERSON OF THE YEAR

Since many of us did not receive an invitation to the 2010 UFCW Person of the Year gala event, I thought that it would be appropriate to provide some information as to the individual who will be receiving the 2010 UFCW Person of the Year award and the location of this years ceremonies.

U.S. Secretary of Labor, Hilda Solis is the 2010 UFCW Person of the Year.

Here is a copy of the invitation that many of us did not receive outlining the festivities.

Additionally, the Golf Tournament is scheduled for Wednesday, May 26, 2010 @ the Bayonet Blackhorse golf course.

The Person of the Year Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, May 27, 2010 @ the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa.

To be continued …..

Interesting footnote to the 2010 UFCW Person of the Year gala event scheduled for the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa.

I contacted my friends over @ Unite Here Local 483 to ask some questions about the Hotel in question. Please check out the Union Hotels @ Local 483's website & try & locate the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa:
http://www.unitehere483.org/unionhotels.html

I was informed that the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa was NOT a Union Hotel. In fact when discussing this issue with Local 483 they indicated that at one time they had a 2 year Picket line on this Hotel. One thing they made clear to me was that this Hotel was not only Non-Union it was ANTI-UNION!

Additionally, according to Unite Here Local 483, they were never contacted by anyone within the UFCW regarding the UFCW Person of the Year event and or did anyone within the UFCW inquire as to the Union status of the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa.

So the 64,000 dollar question remains unanswered. Why did the UFCW schedule our 2010 UFCW Person of the Year event, honoring the U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, at a ANTI-UNION Hotel?

For the record, on numerous occasions in the past the UFCW has always scheduled our Person of the Year event here in Monterey @ the Hyatt Regency.

Yes...... a UNION HOTEL!!!

Everything for a reason when it comes to the UFCW! Last year it was the Save Mart CEO now this year the Secretary of Labor???

Call me the conspiracy thinker if you want but there’s something up with this for the UFCW to be buying off the Secretary of Labor with this award!

Could it be all the complaints filed by rank n file members against the UFCW in the past few years might have got the DOL looking a bit harder at UFCW’s daily business? Or.....

Does the UFCW know that future bargaining agreements between the UFCW and employers will anger the rank n file so bad that many may be petitioning the DOL for decertification from the UFCW and the UFCW will need allies inside the DOL to squash any rank n file rebellions?

I guess only time will. With the UFCW everything is done by design!

Hello John,

Rumors trickling in my direction are saying that some of our “friends” within Unite Here Local 483 are rather “annoyed” with the UFCW’s choice of hotels for this event. It would appear this is a blatant slap in the face to this Unite Local considering they had a long standing picket line on this particular hotel during a organizing campaign. So I’m told anyway.

Can you confirm any of this John?

That is correct IL.....

I believe that it is important to note that Ron Lind who is our President here @ UFCW Local 5, is also an officer with the UFCW States Council.

There is absolutely no excuse for President Lind and or the UFCW States Council for scheduling this event at this ANTI-UNION Hotel! This event took place within UFCW Local 5' jurisdiction and President Lind's responsibility is to be fully aware of the Union and Non-Union Hotels within Local 5's jurisdiction.

Anyone within the UFCW who attempts to justify and or attempts to make excuses for scheduling this event @ this Hotel is full of B.S.

Additionally, for the record, UniteHere Local 483 was gracious enough to assign one of their staff to assist UFCW Local 5 during their campaign against WalMart's Super Store(s) expansion in Salinas, Ca.

So the question that I keep asking myself is WHY would President Lind allow the UFCW States Council to schecule this event @ this ANTI-Union Hotel, knowing full well that this would have a negative impact against UniteHere Local 483??

Whatever happened to Solidarity????
