Part 01: Untangling the Web
Business unionists are not pragmatists doing the best they can in the corporatist jungle, nor are they fallen angels of labour. They're opportunists engaging in self-serving Black Ops behind a facade of unionism. The first in a multi-part series exposes some operators whose schemes have taken "biz unionism" to a whole new level. The rest. _________________ Time is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. Truth is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. Part 02: Cliff & Jean's Excellent Raiding Adventure
In the spring of 1994, the leader of the Canadian UFCW did something unprecedented: He put the details of his Black Op - a covert raiding expedition on the Hotel Employees Restaurant Employees Union in writing. It was a move he'd regret. The rest. _________________ Time is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. Truth is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. Exceptional wm. Finally something the members can use from the training and education fund - insight. Bastards!
It's going to come in handy at my workplace. Inquiring minds want to know and this article(s) will certainly do the job. I have to send a change of address to local 1518, so I won't miss updates - I may return the favour and update them. _________________ Free speech is the whole thing, the whole ball game. Part 03: Mobbed Up and Down
The high strangeness of the UFCW's covert raid on the Hotel Employees, Restaurant Emplooyees Union was amplified by their raiding partner's connections and the timing of the operation. The rest. _________________ Time is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. Truth is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. Great stuff, wm!
I wonder if Mikey Fraser is having as much fun reading this series as I am? Addictive shit, isn't it, little buddy? Hey Mikey, there's soon gonna be some Canadian competion for "the greatest film of all time". How do you think your character will end up? The part is being written for a great actor named Paul "Peewee" Reubens. He'll do you justice, we promise. _________________ Henri Ducard: Your compassion is a weakness your enemies will not share. This ain't no secret at CLC levels. Many locals wouldn't know, but the "businessmen" of the union "movement" have known about this dirt for over a decade.
Even though they know it, they still hug the bastards and call them "brother". They praise them from the podium and tell people that working people are better off for these bastards' efforts. There's a dead moose on the table and not one union leader is willing to talk about it. It's obvious that "Education and Training" funds are not for education and training. |

I can't believe it's a secret at any level. Free flow of money and booze and all of a sudden you've got a close knit mob sharing the filthy little secrets in hottubs and barrooms.
Gruesome details maybe not, but for sure the undercurrents of the crap is what binds them one to the other and makes each feel so special. Is there a cop in the room? _________________ Free speech is the whole thing, the whole ball game. Free speech is life itself. - Salman Rushdie |

Part 04: Stranger Than Fiction
The baffling events surrounding HERE Local 75 in the summer and fall of 1994 defy conventional explanations. One thing was for certain and that was that the UFCW wanted into the hotel industry in a very big way. The whole thing. _________________ Time is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. Truth is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. ufcw really is the ultimate scavenger union. You would think if there were clean local's they'd be lining up to rid the organization of the trash.

I don't doubt that the UFCW was eager to pick up 6200 new members but I'm not sure that this is all that was motivating them. Hotels were completely out of their jurisdiction and unionized hotels were off limits because of the no raiding rule. They might as well have set out to raid the Big 3 automakers or unionized steel plants.
There was something else going on - something that involved control of those hotels. I think we are getting closer to uncovering it. _________________ Time is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. Wasn't it '93-'94 that gaming started taking off in Ontario?

It was in 1993 that legislation permitting casino gambling was rammed through by Bob Rae's NDP government. It was hugely controversial. There was a lot of resistance to the idea from a lot of different people and groups - social services agencies, churches, citizens groups and so on. I would say that the opposition to the introduction of casinos the Rae government was as heated and intense as opposition to to the various policies of the neo-cons who succeeded him.
Chiefs of police were particularly vocal in their opposition fearing an increase in crime and warned about the involvement of organized crime in casinos (either directly through ownership or indirectly through control of the supply of goods and services). Yet Rae was absolutely intent on making it happen to the point that a lot of die-hard NDP'ers were left shaking their heads. Ultimately he shut down a raging debate in the legislature and used his majority to push the casino-enabling legislation through. The word on the street was that a number of prominent biz unionists (who stood by brother Bob during the dark days of his "social contract" adventure when he suspended collective bargaining in the public sector so that cost-cutting measures could be imposed) were lobbying him to allow casinos in Ontario and this was his way of saying "thanks guys for your support". _________________ Time is on the side of the oppressed today, it's against the oppressor. When you mention Bob Rae, here's a nugget...
Quote: Rae's brother John is a Vice-President of Power Corporation, and is a prominent member of the Liberal Party. He was also an adviser to Jean Chrétien from the 1970s until Chrétien retired in 2003. To think, I've been around Rae, Chretien, Kelly and a whole bunch of their buddies. Yet, I never pulled out an uzi. Regrets... I've had a few... _________________ Henri Ducard: Your compassion is a weakness your enemies will not share. Bruce Wayne: That's why it's so important.
