An interesting article about the influence of the Internet on the US election campaign from the Huffington Post. See? Didn't I tell you?

Your lips to God's ear...
...was reading a comment the other day, by Robert Heinlein, I think, to the effect that the greatest innovation in recent human history has been the ability of masses of people to read and write. It's something we take for granted.
...and the internet has enhanced that innovation.

The Making (and Remaking) of John McCain, a fascinating analysis from the NYT Magazine of McCain's handler's repeated efforts to create a compelling "narrative" for the presidential wannabe.

Why have the reated efforts failed so consistently? I think it has a lot to do with the Internet and particularly the availability of quick, concise video clips that are univerally accessible through the miracle of youtube. The impact of this aspect of the digital world is something that I don't think anyone really grasps as yet. But the ability to see (a number of studies have pointed to us being much more readily influenced by visual information) the inconsistencies, foibles and outright bullshitting of people who in the past could present a nice packaged image through the mainstream media has made the task of narrative-spinning very difficult.

You know, in my online journey of the past 8 years I have only one regret. Not long after I got involved with the old MFD site, I had this idea: Set up a web site where people could post videos - any kind of videos and see what happens. It was just a hunch that there might be something to this kind of thing. I had no idea how to go about setting up something like this but had heard it could be done with a huge ass server and some ad money. Unfortunately, I flew the idea past a well-meaning but old school colleague whose reaction was, "Who on earth would want to look at other people's videos online?" After a lengthy discussion about all the other reasons not to do this, I let the idea go. This was in 2002 - well before the youtube guys got started. Crap! That's the last time I take advice from old school types. Waiting for the next brainwave...

"Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see" - thanks to youtube, people are now actually able to put the adage to practical use and it's changing the world!

I remember it all so well wm, perhaps next time, you should be more careful about who you hang out with. Mr. Green
